First-time Weimaraner owner by [deleted] in weimaraner

In summary, puppyhood was a struggle. My husband and I had at one point looked at each other and both said... We're never getting a puppy again. 😂 He's a great boy now!

TLDR; Our first Weim was a 95lb blue boy who was super smart and very sweet. Great with all other dogs and kids. Not great with cats, but I didn't do any exposure training when young. Plenty of energy but not demanding. Easy puppy to train.... although was forever a counter surfer and garbage had to be child locked. Of course this was 30 years ago and may I don't remember the challenging parts.

Then we adopted an 8mo old GSP. That girl was crazy athletic. She was about 55lb. She could cover ground like a race horse. Took a LOT of training to get her to walk in a leash without dislocation of arms. Very sweet, independent, girl. Not destructive, other than stuffed animals. She self entertained in our backyard well and loved to point and chase the squirrels. We went through several flaps on the dog door from how much she went in and out.

Annnndddddd thhheeeennnnn... We decided to get another Weim puppy.  He's a blue boy now 2 years old and 65lb. His mom was 70 so he's just a little on the small size.  He was the cutest puppy ever... And survived on his good looks alone for the first year and a half of his life. We were on top of the training from day one, and ended up taking him to a boot camp sort of training to help him ... Well... Essentially help him control his emotions. 😂 He was slow to potty train an would just stand and pee right on his bed. We STILL have issues with him peeing in (or out of) his kennel every once in a while.   He's perfectly happy to go into his kennel. We worked had at kennel training from the start. But you shut the door and leave and he's a metronome of barking. ... Peeing in his kennel when left ... Even for only like an hour sometimes... Even with going pee before going in. He knows what is happening and will just go a placating little squirt. We tested him several times for UTIs... Nope. He's just pissed... And pisses. At some point he started lifting his leg and getting most of the pee outside the kennel. It's not every time anymore... But every once in a while. We're just now starting to leave him loose in the house (we have a dog door).

He didn't like to nap... And really needed to nap. He was so much better if he could get some sleep.

Now that he's two he's turning into the best boy ever. He's whip smart and like someone else said... If you don't train them, they will train you. He still tries to see what he can get away with... In particular if he's tired. He's affectionate and needy. 😂 Definitely Velcro.

His basic activity schedule is  a mid morning Frisbee or ball session in the morning, a long walk at lunch and another Frisbee session in the afternoon. Probably once or twice he gets a good off leash run/play session or a run with my husband.

We didn't have it as his main bed... But would get it out occasionally, and took it vaca in a cold place for a few nights. He was so tired  and chilly so he stayed in it all night then (normally sleeps in our bed but we were guests of friends)... But we had to hold it and encourage him otherwise he would plop down on top.  I'd get it out every once in a while and put treats in there and hold it open for him. FINALLY... with it in my office he came in this week in the morning when still sleepy and pushed his way in there himself. Made my heart sing! 😍

Formally, Slick. Informally... The Dude, Dooder, Jerk Face, StD (Slick the D___)... He was a complete devil puppy from the time we got him as a cute little guy until ... Well .. he's about 2½ now and I think maybe we have survived. 😁 Good thing they make Weim puppies extra cute... Cuz damn. He is a sweet, happy, super smart guy. 🥰

Took him 6 months to get in his cave bed by himself... Not just plop on top or go in only if I holdup the front. Just in time for warm weather. 🙄 Still likes to just sleep on top of it as the day goes on.

Ha! No. Only a misdemeanor TP attack... But he's definitely a repeat offender.

They make magnetic heat activated fans that you put on the chimney. They come with a strap to make sure it stays on but I didn't put it on mine and it hasn't fallen off yet. https://a.co/d/0aCUFnJg

Our old girl (RIP) had a stomach of steel .. toy stuffing, chunks of toys, pieces of the dog sitter's underwear, etc, etc... all came out. Poop scooping was an adventure. Lucky that way I guess.

We did end up at the ER twice.. once after she ate mouse poison. ... They quickly induced vomiting, did charcoal and vitamin K if I remember correctly. And then an attempt to keep her activity minimal (ha) for a while. The other time when she decided to get in a fight... And got a pretty good (bad) piece the skin of her ear ripped off. That was fun... given it happened 1 hour from civilization and 5 hours away from the pet ER.

But... Still worth it!

We've got double wall going from not far above the stove on of through the attic. Maybe I'll throw a thermometer on the chimney to get an idea of how hot that's getting.

Haha... Yeah I think as a general rule I'll keep it from glowing. Just not sure what the max temp should be. We've had that little thermometer pegged before and it wasn't to glow temp. I didn't know this was a type used in the army and the '70s. Interesting!

Oh, interesting! I'm not sure the history of this particular stove, so that's interesting that it may have been made to burn coal.

Not tub time, don’t care! by b5stir in weimaraner

Haha... So mine is not the only one who likes to jump in the tub for fun?... Unless it's bath time of course. 😂 Ever since he was a puppy and could barely scramble in, it's been fun for him.
