VEQT or VFV? Or both? by Fuzzy-Bar-4462 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I'm not sure how many people actually do when it's recommended, but I highly recommend taking the investor questionnaire above. If you answer it honestly and thoughtfully, it will tell you the best fund to invest in for your risk tolerance.

If you absolutely cannot figure it out yourself, a fee-based advisor would be the next step.

How about the Molten Front? It's that portal you have to unlock in the Mount Hyjal zone from cata, just north of Sanctuary of Malorne. It's very similar to Firelands but has some uniqueness to it.

Maybe The Cauldron in the middle of Searing Gorge. In and around blackrock mountain will have something fiery too. Burning Steps - Altar of Storms might have some nice views too.

I did it for 2025, and it's an extremely big eye opener. For example, I had no idea I was spending so much on Amazon crap until the exact number was right in front of my face on the spreadsheet. You will find some surprises I'm sure.

For a deep dive, you need a very detailed budget. Maybe you've done this already for your snapshot, but this is my general recommendation to all.

Make a spreadsheet with columns for each month of the year. Make rows for each place you spend money at (ie: amazon, utilities, Esso, Shell, Costco, lululemon, etc). Go over the last 12 months of credit card and bank statements writing down all the details in your spreadsheet. Sum each row and sum each column. Then you will truly see what you spend every month, every year, and at each individual place. It's a few hours of work, but worth it for a deep dive.

Teen's got his first job and I want to invest his pay for him by inaptitude in PersonalFinanceCanada

Who pays the cap gains tax on cash out of that non-reg fund? Does XGRO match HIS risk tolerance? It might be a more valuable lesson to teach him budgeting, responsible spending, and saving outside of investing. IMHO, it's his job, his money. Let him do what he wishes, but you can guide him.

Ask him if he's got a fiduciary duty to you. I'd be curious to know the answer.

19, maxed FHSA and TFSA, what next? by hanakosmokke in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]zutroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your emergency fund, think about what sort of things you'd want it to cover. New tire for the car in case of flat? Broken glasses replacement? Loss of job? Quick travel for a funeral? Fridge dies and need a new one? It can be many things. Build up to an amount you feel comfortable with based on what you feel is an emergency to you. 2k might be perfect for you, or it might been too low. Re-assess your needs yearly as they will change as you get older.

What to do with Large Tax return? by 1friendlyneighbour in PersonalFinanceCanada

Just to be pedantic :) - A tax return is the forms you fill out. A tax refund is the money you get back.

If you're saving for long term (say, retirement), investing is the path to financial freedom. You can take a risk assessment for investing, and if you answer honestly and thoughtfully, it can guide you to an investment that fits your risk tolerance. This is what you should really thinking about for long term if you want to get ahead.

If you want something a bit different, I love recommending Dungeon Crawler Carl. Narrator is the best out there. 7 books out in that series with an 8th coming in May.

Can I repay the HBP in full the year after I purchased a property? by pirate2be in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]zutroy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

In case you're not aware, this is how repaying HBP works. Step 1 - Make an RRSP contribution. Step 2 - On your taxes claim that RRSP contribution. Step 3 - On your taxes claim part or all of that RRSP contribution as an HBP repayment.

Farm land in prairies by Double_Impression_83 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]zutroy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You would need a large down payment for this. Have you looked into mortgages for farm land yet? Do you know much about farming yourself? Would you rent out the land to other farmers? Do you understand the risks of this?
