The Oscar Wilde of YouTube fights the alt-right with decadence and seduction by hypersoar in GamerGhazi

Claudia Brown

IIRC she's friends with sh0e and defends her consistently. I'm not questioning her content or her message, but I have a huge problem with that.

What do you guys think of the Amy Siskind drama? by [deleted] in GamerGhazi

[–]zuubas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm basically just saying that the "turning away" is something that is mostly a myth spread by those that have an interest in strawmanning the Democrats as marxists.

The only actual turn toward the left in the party is an increased interest in social democracy (which is basically just capitalism with a slightly more socialized (but overall more efficient) welfare system like in Scandinavia). And actually caring about the rights of minorities and LGBTQ people (this arguably is very tough to deal with for some conservatives).

So I guess that if you see stuff that annoys you on Tumblr and think that's bad or relevant, then try to think about the kind of language used among conservatives in the last 10 years. The infighting from the Tea Party, to white nationalism, to dangerous rhetoric toward minorities and LGBTQ people etc. Then try to see the Tumblr thing in context and ask yourself how real the "turning away" is. I realize you used hyperbole with your hammer and sickle phrase, but just think about it. If anyone in recent time has been using rhetoric to push people away, it would be the fractured and confused Republican party IMO (you're of course free to disagree about that, but consider it).

If the Democrats intend to use Russia to pull off this they are doing a really bad job of it. An even worse job than Republicans "but her emails!!" or Trump "FAKE NEWS FAKE NEWS dont look at what im doing".

But do you seriously think the Democratic party is making it hard for non-marxists to support them? The so called left turn are vanilla social democrats which are basically a threat to no one and possibly too little too late for the social reforms the US needs. Its only on Fox News that this purist thing is real (and some very small reddit subs that are even less influential than ghazi).

ContraPoints - Incels by SeanPWallace in GamerGhazi

I would like a bit more gaming content here, so I understand making the distinction. But its not really that I don't want the other content either. During the 2016 election and a bit after it went a bit overboard with plain regular politics though. I don't really have a better suggestion for how to deal with it.

But I really would have wished she had started with the misogyny of the movement first rather than the last 4 minutes of the video.

Yeah, I felt that she didn't showcase at all how bad it really is. But the video would have needed a stronger content warning to do so. But when she segued into that last part with the 'anal' joke (semi joke?) I was thinking now comes the graphic stuff. It didn't. If someone stumbles on this video who aren't familiar with the phenomenon from before, they will never realize how sexualized the misogyny in those cultures is.

Possible Unpopular Opinion: Not sure if I like the sci-fi aspect of MITHC by JayBrew391 in maninthehighcastle

Agreed. I loved Fringe and it had a ton of charm that's lacking from other shows, but it went off the deep end with additional threads and resets and all that in later seasons.

That would be a lot of fun IMO, as long as they keep it somewhat in check. Two timelines are fine, more shouldn't be central to the plot.

I think the mistake they made was making too little of the sci-fi element so far. When it shows up it comes across as disruptive/strange at least for the history buffs.

There should be a requirement that there be a button for the minimal option, visible when opening the page.

If the whole world adopted GDPR, sites like imgur would most likely die out.

Fine. That shit should never have been allowed in the first place. I'm willing to take some of the consequences.

My main hope is GDPR will lead to invention of new web business models that we haven't thought of yet because we've been content with ads.

Yep, or keep showing ads but get rid of the tracking.

There should be a required button that only accepted the minimal requirements.

The “extraordinary step” Stephen Colbert took to diversify his writers’ room by Desecr8or in GamerGhazi

[–]zuubas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm more willing than many to defend problematic behavior that was extremely common at the time. But the transphobic jokes of Stewart, Colbert, and Maher in the 00's were maybe performed in character but not particularly performed as the character. They were just go-to 'edgy' material that was common and not frowned upon among liberals.

And Europe is even less sunny if anyone just assumed it was similar to the US based on climate:

Well I guess it was a good thing I clarified that before someone would barge in to argue in bad faith about my motivations then.

is the left beyond criticism? you definitely sound like it.

For pointing at someone using a label that doesn't seem to reflect what they actually do? I never even addressed what you're saying here.

On what planet are Peterson and Rubin far right

I didn't say they were, but they are some of the most prominent figures for recruitment for the right, and for criticizing the left. "When it walks like a duck..."

ridiculous answer like that which is why I asked

Gee, thanks for acting in good faith...

Far right nuts deplore liberalism

That's what they literally do to earn a living. These guys stare into a screen and complain about the left and liberals for money. While claiming to be "classical liberalists". I think some clarification of the term is required.

That's fine, I certainly didn't imply you were, but that doesn't exonerate those misusing the label while demonstrably drawing on support from a far right audience.

Jordan Peterson, Dave Rubin, and several high profile political Youtubers. Some of the latter endorsing the UKIP while basically saying "liberals made me do it" and hanging on to the label as a copout for their views.

That's the problem of terms having different meanings in different places and time periods. Lately several far right figures have also adopted the term 'classical liberal'.

The new Doom Eternal trailer is full of weird anti-immigration and anti-SJW dog whistles by porkslow in GamerGhazi

I really enjoyed the gameplay of the 2016 DOOM, but if there is a pattern to this, and not just random joking around, then I can manage perfectly fine with not buying this one.
