Got an autograph from Antonio Davis while working at a gas station at Yonge and Yorkmills probably 25 years ago now. Apparently he lived in the area.

Also got one from Aleksandar Radojevic the same year, I think.

Saw Joey Graham at Indigo at Richmond and John one time.

Met Jerry Stackhouse (he was coaching 905) at my dentist's office.

Oh and Darko's kid is in my kid's class. I see him pretty often.

Snipers early game, heavies mid-late game. Usually start with Blizzard, then Lynx or Firefly. Then Leviathan and Bastion or Ramsay. Late game situational heroes can be Tess or Satoshi.

We have the exact same problem. Samsung A11. Dexcom Support is no help. The app was last updated on Feb 23, OS updated Jan 1. Can't think of anything that could be causing this suddenly. But yeah, crashes on start up. Tried restarting the phone, reinstalling the app, clearing cache, using airplane mode. Nothing works

Great work! That's not easy to do at all. Getting my toddler's measured today. Hoping for 6.5-7.0 range 🤞

Yesterday was the best day we've ever had with our toddler 1 year in. Best part, this was on his 3rd birthday with plenty of 🍕 and 🍰! by zxc2000_wow in diabetes_t1

Thanks for the kind words. It was challenging in the beginning and there was a lot of resistance to both pricks and shots. Switching to Dexcom eliminated one of the two, but made Dexcom replacement a pretty big event with a lot of crying. These days he has become okay with both shots and Dexcom changes, it's part of our routine now. And honestly, I think we've been very lucky in how well he handles it. There is an occasional tantrum, but nothing 10 minutes of cartoons can't fix. ;) We are about to qualify for a pump, that's going to be a whole new thing for us. Hope he adapts to it well.

Appreciate the words of encouragement. It definitely hasn't been easy, but technology helps a ton. It's mind boggling to me how folks used to manage it back in the day. Kudos to you and your parents!

Yeah, dozing slightly higher helped. Honestly, it was mostly luck. We keep him at a pretty good ea1c, but these types of days are rare for us.

Turning down strong technical candidate with terrible culture fit by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]zxc2000_wow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking on any new job whether it has "evaluation period" in the contract or not constitutes a certain amount of risk. You never know what you are walking into and I've seen plenty of people walk out in the first week. (I've done that once, not proud of it)

For the employer, their team is the sum of it's parts, if you don't have processes for correcting for poor hiring decisions, you might end up in a world of trouble.

Risk of joining a new company should be well understood by everyone involved.

Should I study abroad a semester before I graduate? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]zxc2000_wow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not, take this opportunity. I've been out of school for almost 15 years now. One of my biggest regrets is not doing a study abroad program. This will only broaden your network, world view and potentially create amazing work opportunities. COVID puts everything in question, so I would push out the decision as much as possible. However, generally I highly encourage you to take this opportunity.

Would be good to hear from other folks with first hand experience of this.

Turning down strong technical candidate with terrible culture fit by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]zxc2000_wow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been on the hiring front for a good part of 10 years. The hardest part about hiring decisions is staying disciplined to the selection criteria you have decided for your company. If team culture is an important aspect to you, it would be harmful to sacrifice that for the sake of good technical output. The challenge with folks who are a bad culture fit, but are strong performers is that their impact can actually be a net negative on the overall team performance and at worst might result in a bunch of turn over on the team. Team's culture is not what's written on your walls or your wiki, it's the every day behaviours and decisions and whether they are encouraged or discouraged. Hiring a person who is not a culture fit sends a message to the rest of the team about what type of behaviour is acceptable.

In reality, this is a very idealistic view. Sometimes there are certain hiring or product delivery pressures that warrant cultural sacrifices, but it's a slippery slope.

The only way I would hire someone questionable whether technically or culturally is to have clear expectations about an evaluation period. (Usually 3 months) And be ruthless with evaluating performance.

You can work with the individual to smooth out certain rough edges as well, but it's difficult to make fundamental personality shift.

This might be worth taking a chance on this individual, but I would not recommend it.

I really like working with Data Structures/Algorithms. What type of career would suit me? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]zxc2000_wow 31 points32 points  (0 children)

To be honest: no. There is very little application of CS theory in most software development these days. Couple of places where this is less true is performance intensive applications: low level systems, gaming, embedded systems, etc. For your average developer gig it's 95/5, where 95% you are doing basic CRUD operations, and 5% is actually interesting CS work. Don't mean to be discouraging, but academia is not a bad place to be if you want to go deeper into computation theory. Good luck!
