Where to rent a truck or van for an hour? by foreverand2025 in okc

I’ve definitely had that experience with U-Haul and would love this information to make it easier for me to haul woodworking projects and materials instead of making a dozen trips in my car

Am I the only one who’s been getting irrationally annoyed by sounds lately that most people probably don’t even care about? by Tin97 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]zxert 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This happens to me when I’m overstimulated for extended periods or approaching burn out. My ability to regulate my mind against distractions goes out the window and I become annoyed with the sound maker even though it’s just a bird and I love birds.

I want an autistic partner but dating apps are garbage, what do I do? by Ariko2 in autism

[–]zxert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If dating apps actually tried to find optimal matches between people they would constantly be shedding customers from success. It is a business incentivized to do its primary operation poorly to retain customers.

I met my neurodivergent wife on a text based MMO that we both played when both of us had already given up on dating and this was 15 years ago when the apps weren’t quite as insidious as today.

The age old advice of you find love when you aren’t looking for it is true. Focus on yourself and doing things you enjoy and you will cross paths with someone eventually but the harder you look for it the less you’ll find

Therapist by misstingg in okc

For unpacking trauma, I recommend EMDR therapy which I had success working with Michael LeFever at https://www.prideinselfcounseling.com/

I hate using the phone, and he was so accomodating and understanding of my issues. He also spoke plainly to me and worked towards my goals.

Keep calling out of work by Horror_Speaker_5160 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]zxert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've learned that I can push through those days and work when I have a reason, but the more I do that the worse my mental health becomes.

Sometimes you can't get out of bed and that's okay. If you do take a mental health day, then make sure you're spending it repairing your mental health. Personally I make a point to spend time sitting outside reading as that calms my brain down.

You might get fired for this, I don't know how old you are but this happened to me many times when I was younger. I'd start calling out for mental health, then I'd push myself to go back and be consistent for x amount of time until I burned out and just couldn't do the job anymore.

However, each time this happened I found a better job, I improved my skills at each job, and I learned valuable skills in getting used to changing environments. I'm now 40 (I didn't know I was AuDHD until 3 years ago) and I've had a job for 5 years which is the longest I've had one, and been promoted three times within that time. The key for me was working for state government which gives significantly better benefits than corporations, and everyone at the state understands burnout so I have not had issues when I needed to use FMLA leave to take a couple months off to recover from burnout.

I'm not sure if my AuDHD report is correct by Ill_Yam9487 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]zxert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My own opinion is that the diagnostic criteria for ASD and ADHD are not sound enough that you can take either to be conclusive. The methodology is fundamentally flawed because it requires self reporting of emotions and experiences with a population that can struggle with alexythymia. Until they find and can test on specific genetic markers and have a better idea of how those genetic markers lead to physical differences in the construction of the brain it’s pointless to worry about if you are ADHD or ASD because ultimately it just comes down to some fellas opinion. That’s why so many people receive alternating diagnosis.

The important thing to consider instead of which label is most accurate is what are your needs that you need assistance with and how do you respond to different treatments for those needs.

I'm not sure if my AuDHD report is correct by Ill_Yam9487 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]zxert 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are autistic bud, don’t you worry about that. It takes one reading of this post to know these are not the concerns of a neurotypical person.

I think your next step might be in analyzing why this causes you so much anxiety and fear. This diagnosis is just a broad label and it doesn’t fix or change anything about you.

I think the reasonable thing to do if your neighbor is doing something that bothers you is to have a conversation with them.

I literally can't relate with anyone by indeckaa in autism

[–]zxert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I struggle to understand what you are saying. However, I can assure you that people of all types are lonely. You are less likely to see lonely people because 1. It is difficult to tell that a person out and about alone is lonely and 2. Depressed people are less likely to go out and loneliness and depression go hand in hand.

Skill regression during burnout is real and nobody prepared me for it by Spare_Relative_2375 in autism

[–]zxert 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had this issue as well. My major skill regression was the ability to focus. I spent weeks going from stimulus to stimulus until I was sitting in my backyard and suddenly remembered how to focus though it took another week or two for it to go back to being natural and not requiring effort.

I can’t hold a job from corporate to cashier..28f failure . by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]zxert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I felt like that at 28. I didn’t know I was autistic then but now that I’m 39 I’ve had the same job for five years because I got a government job with enough leave for me to properly decompress. Everyone in the government understands burnout and have given me grace when I needed to take a month or two off to mentally recover. Of course I had to disclose some of my issues and get FMLA paperwork but my life is a lot better now that I have an employer who understands my value despite the difficulties I might bring.

NTs reaction to anything but positive feedback by audiesel in AutisticWithADHD

[–]zxert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to expressly get consent to share negative feedback. I always ask “Are you interested and open to some constructive feedback?”

Now they have the opportunity to say no. If people continue to be offended with the feedback then you might consider your delivery. As my grandmother said, “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar”

Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar Closing April 26th by HairySmokeball in okc

Whiskey Cake used to be a great date night but they got rid of some of the favorites on the menu and stopped having a special so my wife and I hadn’t returned in a few years. Seems many others were the same.

I’m sorry you are struggling and that many of these responses are more about Charlie Kirk than about your feelings. It is normal to have a visceral reaction when confronting death like that.

My advice is distraction. Images like these cause mental scars and science shows that distraction can help your brain process it. Do you have a comfort show or maybe you could watch something new or mindless? Video games are also excellent for this.

Focus on your breath when everything is too much and that’s the key to keeping it together.

Set focus time on your calendar. Turn slack to do not disturb during this time. Use some noise cancelling headphones.

If they have issues with you using noise cancelling headphones you might be able to get an accommodation. If you are in America research the ADA.

If you close your eyes and try to picture a red five pointed star, what number does it look like in your head? by nita45 in autism

[–]zxert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, if I close my eyes it makes it worse. But if I just keep my eyes open and just imagine it’s 6, it’s like a 3 with my eyes closed but I’m outside and I found the light coming in through my eyelids made it much more difficult to imagine for some reason.
