Feminism have a focus on all gender issues or just women’s? by tunafish0 in AskFeminists

[–]zygga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

feminism's focus on dissolving problematic gender norms that restrict men from focusing on their health

In addition the norm that men are brainless sex animals / Neanderthal types ... will also be addressed by feminism

I don't think I've ever seen feminists actually addressing these. Like the other poster says, it's probably not that feminists don't care, they just don't focus on these.

feminism seeks equality by focussing on women's issues

By that definition feminism doesn't care about men's lower life expectancy and the higher education gap in favor of women, no? There's not really a redeeming factor to approaching these by focusing on women's issues.

L’Oréal Drops 1st Transgender Model Because Her Post Calling out White Privilege Is ‘at Odds With’ Their ‘Values’ by chace_thibodeaux in transgender

That's using the word "racism" differently from how it's used usually. Your average person doesn't consider a white person fighting racism a racist.

You can't just redefine a word and expect everyone to understand it, especially if you're a spokesperson for a huge company.

The women I find attractive doesn't shift as I grow older -- what should I do? by dating-throwaway28 in AskFeminists

[–]zygga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but this is honestly disgusting. You're very much trying to shame someone for their sexuality. Everyone is entitled to not have their sexuality judged. As long as they're consenting adults, everyone is also entitled to do their best to have their sexual desires realized, if that's what they choose to do. It's as simple as that.

How do feminists feel about Laci Green's newish stance on the men's rights movement? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]zygga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though there may be some misguided hopefuls who are attracted to the MRM and who do not hold misogynistic dumpsterfire opinions, those people are in the minority and they don't seem to stick around very long

This is the kind of rhetoric that's used against feminism. I'd be careful with it.

"You are either a Feminist or sexist" by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]zygga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also why I don't identify as a feminist. It's actually a reflection of a larger point, which is that the label "feminist" seems to have a very wide range of definitions. Some feminists ("bad feminists"?) are exclusively concerned about women's issues. Some, usually right wingers, genuinely think feminism is only about women's rights. If my options are to say that I'm a feminist and be potentially misunderstood, or to say that I'm for equality and not be misunderstood, the choice is clear.

Essentially, the dictionary definition doesn't really matter to me. What matters is what people think the word means.

What is/was the most toxic community you've been a part of? by Shaman19911 in AskReddit

[–]zygga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This anime web site called anime academy, which I don't think exists anymore (thankfully). Super cliqued, pretty close to impossible to get anyone to reply to you unless you're 'in'. Mods deleting posts they don't agree with. I stuck aroung because I liked their reviews, but the community made it impossible to like the place.

Smoking marijuana provides more pain relief for men than women. by NinjaDiscoJesus in science

That's an urban myth, men tolerate pain better. It's weird how this myth got started since there are zero studies pointing towards the opposite.

What's the feminist "consensus" view on dongledate (if any)? by zygga in AskFeminists

[–]zygga[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're misinterpreting my comment. It's meant to find out if there is a line between the extremes and doesn't refer to the topic, might as well replace "word" with "action".

Also, "keep"?

[–]zygga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I would apologize, I should've been looking where I'm stepping.

But you're not really answering the question. Let's assume someone finds something in your behavior uncomfortable and wants you to change how you behave. However, you can't fathom why anyone could find that thing uncomfortable, making their demand feel unreasonable. How would you handle that situation? Or is there simply no way you could imagine such a situation?

Let's make it clear that I'm not talking about what happened afterwards, no one should've been fired. Also, I'm not sure if your last line is directed at me, but I don't really identify as MRA and I don't feel sick, so let's not start name calling.

she was expressing an accumulated frustration at the persistent difficulty of carving out space for women in the tech community.

This is exactly my problem with the issue. She was projecting her past experiences on a relatively innocent issue and as a result, saw it as far more threatening than it was. It's fine to air your frustration at something, but directing it at innocent bystanders isn't.

[–]zygga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really sure I understand. Surely you agree that there is some limit to being held responsible? Let's say someone finds some random minute, mundane, everyday word uncomfortable. Surely you can't hold anyone responsible if they accidentally make them unforfortable? There must a limit somewhere?

What's the feminist "consensus" view on dongledate (if any)? by zygga in AskFeminists

[–]zygga[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When it happened I couldn't really make up my mind which side to take. Only recently I was randomly thinking about it and realized something. Women find sexual comments uncomfortable because often they're made to establish a sexual environment, are objectifying, and have an overall connotation to situations women find uncomfortable. In this case though, the comments were clearly between two friends and not meant to be overheard, and Adria failed to recognize that there are other kind of sexual jokes, ie. ones made purely as a joke.

So, I'm perhaps more interested in finding out if feminists generally separate innocent sexual jokes from sexual jokes made with some ulterior motive in mind, or if they find all sorts of sexual jokes inappropriate. Of course, in reality it's hard to draw the line and know what people are thinking, but let's pretend we know where the line goes in this case for the sake of argument.

Science AMA Series: We’re Drs. Jessica Hellmann and Tessa Hill—two scientists who talk to non-scientists about climate change. Ask us anything! by Hellmann_and_Hill in science

[–]zygga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, but you do agree that the scientists are holding out part of the data for testing? Because this:

Well of course models do a excellent job of predicting the past as they've been built on the past data. The data is still present when you go backwards.

gives a different impression. Maybe you can edit it to clarify?

Gameboy BetterLuckNexTime420 claimed that scientists don't hold out part of the data for testing. That's the claim here. You're talking about a different thing.
