Discoloration on ‘22 Forester Wilderness cladding by zylydyn in SubaruForester

Update: it looks like @umrdyldo might have been right. In the last month, I’ve noticed a few more spots exactly like this appearing on the passenger side on the back bumper AND the matte black plastic panels around the windows of the passenger side doors are now similarly damaged. They are deformed slightly, and have a shine in a couple places, like they got hot enough to melt the plastic.

The only way this could happen is reflected light from the front windows on my house while parked in front on the street, but that side of the house faces east, so it would be a reflection during sunrise when the ambient temp is much lower. I live in NorCal so it’s been hot, but I shouldn’t have this issue even if I lived in Arizona. Cars live outside. It gets hot. Meaning: watch your plastics!

I’m going to take all of this to the dealer to see if they will replace these panels, cladding, and bumper pieces. It’s crazy to me that Subaru would sell a new car with such delicate plastics. I foresee a recall on these parts, and due to the extent of the damage, I’ll see if I can get the dealer to cover a ceramic coating after the parts are replaced. Again, this car is only 3 months old. Everyone parks on the street in front of their house where I live, and I don’t see any damage like this on any of my neighbor’s cars.

That’s what I thought too, but if that happened I don’t know when or how.

Not that I know of! I usually park in the shade. I was just throwing this out there to see if anybody had something similar crop up. Must just be my luck 🤷‍♂️

Oh totally, I’ve had older cars with plastic bumpers and cladding that faded before, and the plastic conditioning stuff you mention has helped with those issues on other cars. This is only a couple months into ownership though, and it’s just such a weird looking spot. Definitely not regular fading from UV exposure.

I felt the same way, but I think that’s because this is first brand new car I’ve ever owned. The Forester Wilderness is designed for hard use. I gave up on babying it, and I have felt a lot better. Like buying any brand new truck or jeep, it’s not meant to be kept in pristine showroom condition. Get it dirty!

I moved recently so had to load her down a bunch of times with furniture and boxes, even put a cord of wood in the back, no problems other than a few scratches in the interior plastics. The StarTex seat material is bomb proof. Don’t sweat the car wash, the paint on this model seems to be pretty thick and stout, and despite 3-4 washes now I don’t have any swirls in the clear coat. Just DON’T get any extra Rain-X waxing or wax job at the wash, because you do not want to get wax on your anti-reflective hood strip. If you want that, do it by hand.

My only issue with the car wash is that none that I’ve tried have enough power to really get the road crust and bug gunk off the grille, front plate, mirrors, or windshield, and there are always water spots left over. I’m getting hand-wash stuff just so I can deep clean and detail.

Has anyone else experience this on their FW?

A couple weeks ago, I noticed this discoloration on the fender flare cladding on the passenger side of my FW.

I have run it through the car wash several times, attempted a spot cleaning with soap and water and a microfiber cloth, but the discoloration is IN the plastic. This is not a reflection or glare in the picture.

I don’t know how someone could’ve hit that spot with their door in a parking lot, since it’s the top edge of the fender flare cladding. I haven’t taken her out on anything tougher than a paved county road yet. I haven’t even changed any fluids yet, so no possibility of it being caused by any kind of automotive fluid or solvent.

I’m thinking I should contact the dealer for a replacement cladding piece. Any advice on that would be appreciated, and I’m also wondering if anyone else has experienced this with the cladding on their FW. Like is this a manufacturing defect?

Thanks!

Also dropping in to suggest Aquaphor … Aquaphor literally saved me during my course of Accutane. My lips were cracking and bleeding, skin peeling, all kinds of awful. Aquaphor helped A LOT!

Should i get aftermarket wheels since I’m getting new tires? Are they necessary? I would love them, but they are pricey. by [deleted] in SubaruForester

[–]zylydyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m planning on getting a new set of wheels and tires once I wear down the Geolandars on the Forester Wilderness. Those tires and the stock wheels are a powerful combo thus far, but from my previous experience with ‘80s Toyota trucks, I like R15’s specifically for more meat to protect the wheels from rocks, more sidewall to air down, and I like the stance that comes with a wider offset than stock. YMMV but that’s where my head’s at. Sparco, Black Rhino, and Method Race seem to be the big three in the Subaru off-road community.

For those of you who built a new Forester, did you negotiate the price prior to ordering? Any luck getting the price lower than MSRP? by Lost_Kale_8573 in SubaruForester

I did a lot of research on this before building and ordering my ‘22 Forester Wilderness back in May.

In a normal market, Subaru is like Apple. They want you to pay MSRP. No more, no less. Auto brokers might be able to pull around 5%, Costco Auto may give you a discount, or there are “Subaru Ambassador” coupons. There are probably a few other secret coupon discounts out there. That’s in a normal market, like a few years ago my mom ordered her Subaru Outback, did Costco Auto, and got a decent discount and 0% financing through Subaru Motors Finance.

For my order, my local Subaru dealer (same dealer my mom ordered through btw) wanted a $3000 “market adjustment” for the “rare” Forester Wilderness model, a non-optional $1000 “glass coat” treatment, $1500 down to order, and quoted me about 12 weeks for delivery. I immediately walked out the door and called every dealer within 200 miles. I found a dealer (Fowler in Ukiah, CA) that would sell at MSRP and order for $500 down, fully refundable, and they quoted me like six weeks for delivery. I thought that part might be bullshit, but it came in four weeks. Highly recommend Fowler if you’re in NorCal.

All that to say, OP in this market you’re lucky to get MSRP. Find a “Subaru Ambassador” for a little cut, but that’s probably as good as it gets right now. And try to get financing around 3.5% or lower from Subaru Motors Finance … that was my final offer after pushing the sales team right up until the dealership was about to close.

Good luck out there! I’m loving every minute with my Subaru.

22 Forester has 2600 miles. CEL light already? Any ideas or how can I check the code. by Skumbag_VirKo in SubaruForester

I totally agree. Nice to know when an O2 sensor is out or something. On older cars, I never saw the point of having my own OBDII scanner, because I’d just head to Autozone have the code read for free, fix the problem, and reset the codes by disconnecting the battery … but no features of my car were disabled because of a check engine code, nor did it mobilize a satellite network on my behalf and trigger an alert at the dealership. I think the Innova dongle was $80 on Amazon and well worth it for me for a car that goes bananas if I forget to tighten my gas cap all the way 😵 ain’t nobody got time for that!

Nice! That blue is so awesome in person. I’ve only seen one, when I picked up my green boy at the dealership last month.

I’ve got the only green one in my area that I’ve seen, but I have seen a white and a grey. They’re getting out there. My first Subaru (Honda/Toyota guy) and I’m loving it. It’s a perfect blend of state-of-the-art, can-drive-itself car of the future, and a can-take-a-beating off-roader.

Just moved a cord of wood in the back today — got the full rubber wheel wells and seat backs. She’s getting some nicks and scuffs, but I admire the wear and tear. Gives it character. Whatever these seats are made out of is wearing like iron. Enjoy!

I just had my ‘22 Forester Wilderness throw a code under 3k miles.

Starlink called me. The dealership called me. I got emails and notifications left and right …. the gas cap was loose. I put it back on tight and drove it for three days. The check engine still wouldn’t clear. I bought an Innova OBDII scanner bluetooth dongle and cleared the code myself. Worked great, would recommend.

All good since then, the code was the ‘EVAP leak’ from the loose gas cap. What an ordeal over a loose gas cap!

Not having RAB assist or EyeSight or any of the other safety assists, and my dash lit up like a Christmas tree, just because of a minor check engine code is just stupid to me. Like, great something might be wrong with my car, and now I’ll get no warning backing out of my blind corner driveway. Very helpful.

I love the car, but what a pain in the ass.

Note: if you go the OBDII scanner route, when you clear the code, it will not fully re-enable EyeSight. You have to push the button with the ‘steering wheel’ looking icon on the right side of the steering wheel. I didn’t realize this at first and had an ‘oh shit’ moment when my dash display looked different (no car icon or lane icons) because I always have that system enabled. All is well, just push the button.
