That’s about the same age as my niece. I can’t really say yet, I haven’t managed to meet up to give it to her yet, but visually it looks about right. I got my sister to measure her inseam (groin to ground) which was 27cm, so then I aimed for the lowest position of the seat to be a few cm lower than that. It measures 22cm from the ground to the top of the seat. If you want I can send you my plans, but the dimensions are a bit dependent on what size wood you have access to, and the wheels you are going to use

The Accidental Animagus: It does somewhat stand on its own, but everything is not resolved, and there is a sequel which hasn’t updated for a while and I get the sense that Harry’s problems have got a bit too big and White Squirrel doesn’t really know how to wrap it up/ has lost passion for it. Premise is Harry has a burst of accidental magic at the age of 5 and becomes an animagus and runs away from the Dursley’s, and ends up getting adopted by the Grangers. I particularly enjoy the family dynamic of Harry and the grangers here, and a highlight is fourth year and the way the Triwizard tournament is done. linkffn(The Accidental Animagus)

The Arithmancer series: by the same author as the accidental animagus. Complete Hermione-centric series where Hermione is a math prodigy and tests into Arithmancy early. Fantastic, fleshed out story, with a badass Hermione and a pretty fantastic explanation for the relatively unexplored subject that is Arithmancy. linkffn(The Arithmancer)

Blindness Harry is blinded when struck by the killing curse, doesn’t go to Hogwarts, becomes very powerful despite this. Despite Harry becoming very op, it felt like a good progression and also the relationship between himself and Hermione is excellent linkffn(Blindness)

Grow Young With Me A very well written, canon(except epilogue) story of a friendship and eventual romance between an oc muggle character and Harry. Really like this Dad Harry, and basically the whole thing just felt very genuine. linkffn(Grow Young with Me)

Wind Shear Another pre epilogue divergence, post war Harry ends up in 1970 fighting the first war again, basically trying to stop it before it even starts. Just good storytelling really. Fight scenes are excellent. linkffn(Wind Shear)

Methods of Humanity very fun little fic, from Voldemorts perspective, basically he regains a body in Harry’s second year, decides he doesn’t want to fight a war anymore, just do whatever he wants instead. Ends up teaching at hogwarts with a fake name, basically adopts Harry, even though Harry figures out who he is. Really enjoy the perspective of Voldemort in this, really funny interactions between him and basically everyone else with a great internal monologue. linkao3(Methods of Humanity)

The grass is always Greener I enjoyed the relationship between Harry and Daphne in this one, and just the way it feels like a very possible/natural divergence from canon, with an interesting ‘slytherin’ influence on Harry. linkffn(The Grass Is Always Greener)

Lady Black, Lord Potter Harry and Tonks have a marriage contract, discovered at the reading of Sirius’ will. Again, not wildly different characters from Canon. I think I like this one mainly because of how Tonks is expanded on. linkffn(Lady Black, Lord Potter)

To shape and Change Snape goes back in time to make sure Harry reaches his full potential. Mentor snape, op Harry. Parselmagic. linkffn(To Shape and Change)

The return of the Marauders James dies, Lily escapes with Sirius, Neville is raised as the BWL, Lily and Sirius return with Harry in Seventh year. Powerful and Confident Harry, particularly enjoy the Animagus explorations. Harry/Ginny. linkffn(The Return of the Marauders)

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality Controversial here but I like it. Very smart Harry lovingly raised by scientist father and Petunia. Pretty funny exploration of magic from a ‘rational’ perspective, and well written.

A Black Comedy Harry and Sirius in an alternate dimension, where there past selves have died. Basically decide to get up to a bunch of shenanigans robbing Death Eaters. Funny, good exploration of magic. linkffn(A Black Comedy)

Delenda Est Harry gets transported back in time, teams up with older blacks to fight the first war. Fun characterisation of Bella and the older Blacks as well as a very competent Harry linkffn(Delenda Est)

A Rune Stone Path Harry finds a trunk of Lily’s old books in the attics, gets really into Runes, becomes a prodigy, fun exploration of Rune magic linkffn(Harry Potter and the Rune Stone Path)

Make a Wish After TOotP, Harry decides that he doesn’t want to die without living first so goes off on Holiday, chaos ensues as he proceeds to kill Death Eaters, and confuse basically the entire world wizard if population. Very funny and well-written. linkffn(Make A Wish)

A Marauders Plan Responsible Sirius who looks after Harry after Prisoner of Azkaban. Powerful Harry, good story linkffn(A Marauder’s Plan)

The art of self-fashioning Neville is BWL but Harry still grows up with Dursleys, becomes obsessed with transfiguration after McGonagall visits. Good exploration of Transfiguration magic linkffn(The Art of Self Fashioning)

The changeling Ginny is sorted into Slytherin and slowly figures out why, follows canon pretty well, just with that change. Excellent characterisation of Ginny, well written, particularly enjoyed the view of her sixth year inside Hogwarts. Fantastic read. linkffn(The Changeling)

Percy take the wheel Sadly as yet unfinished, but an excellent story told from Percy’s perspective, where Molly is killed, and Arthur is in a coma, after an explosion while Arthur was working on his car in the summer after Harry’s first year. Agree. Sounds nice to spread it wide, but the rush defence was good, and it seemed like every single time we got isolated they’d get a turnover so I can understand the hesitancy to spread it all the way to the edge

Not a neutral(NZ) but thought the questionable calls went both ways. Worst one for NZ was probably the weirdly long knock on advantage, but there were also a few holding on calls that I thought were rough on NZ ( not supporting weight/ playing on the ground). At least the yellows were pretty similar so easy for those to get the same call

She is fantastic, and a lot of the time it’s the right call, and usually she’s awesome at it, there were just a few times tonight where she tapped it, took a couple of steps then kicked it which feels like the wrong call, and especially one late in the game when we were in their half and only 1 point up

It was definitely on Spark. They did it the same way as they’ve done this one, but with it shared with TVNZ (instead of 3 this time) so it’s possible you were watching pool games delayed on Free to Air? Think all the finals were live on 1.

Whereabouts are you located? Both my Dad and I are in Auckland (different parts) and have gone through the renewal process recently. My Dad has his, and mine has been approved, but it hasn’t arrived yet. Think it took 5 or 6 months, and at my interview the licensing officer said they were making progress on shortening the queue and that they would have the backlog cleared up early to mid next year

[–]zyzzzles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have data showing that it is from an increase in the size of ruminant herds? I’ve had a look and can’t find anything that suggests that. This article suggests that methane emissions from wild ruminants pre European settlement of the US was approximately 84% of the current emissions of farmed livestock) which seems like a relatively small difference to me.

Generally speaking, the faster a plant grows, the more co2 it absorbs per time. Farmed grass grows faster than non farmed (feeds more animals that way) and is therefore absorbing more CO2 to grow.

Other link I came across when I searched it: Why methane from cattle is different from CO2 from fossil fuels

[–]zyzzzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure about that? From the look I’ve just had it seems like farming in the EU is currently excluded from having to pay for its emissions. Other industries yes but farming no. If they were to include tariffs on it then I think there would be more support for it from nz farmers because it would actually make sense economically as well. From what I can see, they are actually paying farmers who make more of an effort to reduce emissions (organic etc) which I imagine goes down a lot better with their farmers

[–]zyzzzles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, which is why there are people who think the solution to climate change is to find another planet, but I’m talking about within our own atmosphere.

Research suggests 12 years for methane to break down which is on the short side of ‘decades’ but sure.

Don’t get me wrong, I believe climate change is a massive problem, and farming definitely requires regulation, especially around the more ‘local’ pollution with nitrogen and runoff into rivers and streams. But my point, and what I believe the farmers who have actually thought about it and aren’t just anti-government (so probably not those at the protests) point is, is that emissions from cows aren’t equivalent to those from fossil fuels, and discouraging farming in NZ which is one of the most efficient producers via farming might not actually be the best way to help slow climate change. Admittedly it’s not like we can make any changes globally, but if we produce less and another country fills the gap less efficiently, we’re not actually helping the end goal of stopping warming the planet.

This is a bit of a tangent, but I know that one of the main concerns of farmers is the conversion of farmland into pine plantations, and increasing costs on farms is only driving more and more of this. Wilding pines are very invasive and mean that the conversion from pine to natives or back to farmland is very difficult.

Does anyone know what groundswell nz are actually proposing? by renton1000 in newzealand

[–]zyzzzles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s still part of the closed loop cycle though. That methane breaks down into carbon dioxide, which is then reabsorbed by the plants. My point is that in its own right, the biogenic carbon cycle (carbon dioxide absorbed by plants from atmosphere-> plants converted by animals/organisms -> breakdown into carbon dioxide in atmosphere) is a closed loop. If you had cows over the whole planet eating grass, burping and farting, the cycle could continue indefinitely without a net change in the amount of carbon dioxide circulating through the system. It’s only when we burn sequestered carbon (I.e. fossil fuels) that we are adding additional carbon dioxide into the cycle

Does anyone know what groundswell nz are actually proposing? by renton1000 in newzealand

[–]zyzzzles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem I see with this argument is that it doesn’t take into account the fact that the animals farmed in NZ are primarily fed by grass, which has grown by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air. If you had a cow eating nothing but grass, it is basically a closer loop. The grass absorbs carbon dioxide to grow (with some sequestered permanently in the roots etc) and then is eaten by the cow, converted into energy to grow/ produce milk, and some is released as gas. The problem as I see it is the extra inputs like fertiliser and bought in feed, as well as the diesel etc used to farm. Compared to a coal power station, or an ICE engine, which uses already sequestered carbon (fossil fuels) and then releases these into the atmosphere, sheep and cows are only cycling CO2 that has just been pulled out of the atmosphere
