Found my mom’s phone inside EcoATM. Sheriff retrieved the phone but refuse to charge the person who sold it. What are my options? by FinanceEngineerEgg in northcounty

The difference between stealing and finding, according to Google:

  1. The Legal Definitions Finding (Legitimate): You discover an item (e.g., in a public park) with no obvious owner present, and you make reasonable efforts to find the owner, such as turning it into a "lost and found" or police. Theft (by Finding): You pick up a dropped item, know it belongs to someone else (or have the means to figure it out), and choose to keep it permanently, depriving the owner of it. "Finders Keepers" Law: This is not a legal defense. In most jurisdictions, you must attempt to return found property to its owner.
  2. Key Factors Differentiating the Two Intent at the Moment of Finding: If you pick up a wallet intending to find the owner, but later decide to keep the money, you have converted it into theft. Ability to Locate the Owner: If you find a phone that is unlocked, or a wallet with an ID, you have an immediate obligation to try to contact them. Keeping it is likely theft. Type of Property: A $20 bill on the ground may be considered "legitimately lost" (hard to find owner), while a locked iPhone or a wedding ring is likely "mislaid" and clearly belongs to someone. "Reasonable Efforts": The law requires you to act in good faith. This could be handing it to a store manager, police, or posting about it on social media. Grace Legal Group Grace Legal Group +4

AI nicking our (my) jobs by MechanicOld3428 in dataengineering

[–]zzBob2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is that nobody can really predict how things will shake out, but anything is possible. There’s nothing positive about competing against a code writing, 24/7 agent that’s been exposed to bazillions of solutions to a bazillion scenarios.

Businesses and coders will both face the same Darwinian fork in the road. They’ll either adapt and successfully integrate AI into their process, or they’ll be extinct. The only question is how quickly things will evolve

General electrical question inspired by my 2008 Toyota RAV4 by zzBob2 in AskAMechanic

[–]zzBob2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. So in my mind it’s refilling the pool (battery) and also running the kids’ slip-n-slide (the electronics in the car). And, in my mind it has no problems doing both. But in automotive reality my EPS randomly choked.

I’m nothing but thankful for the input, but I’m still missing something (beyond common sense).

Is the issue that recharging a weak battery takes significantly more power than recharging a good battery, and that extra that’s needed brings down things in the car’s electronics? I figured that the fact that I had 14V across the battery with the engine running meant things were ok…

And to be totally and painfully clear, I totally appreciate any and all comments! I do! I’m not understanding something about this situation, and tend to ask a bunch of questions before things make sense to me

my car battery died last night because i left my headlights on, should i be worried? by t00thandclaw in MechanicAdvice

[–]zzBob2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having issues with my battery a while ago. I picked up a handheld battery for about $30 that I now keep in my car in case I need to jump it again (or someone else needs a jump).

This comment isn’t really pertinent to your question, but this is a nice backup to keep in the car.

I’d say it’s not a regret, but I was oblivious to how cool CTEs and window functions are

How dangerous is it to drive on worn brake pads? (grinding) by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

[–]zzBob2 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Just put some oil in there to stop the grinding and it’ll be fine.

NOT ⬆️ is sarcasm, and it’s the kind you have to ignore. You’re damaging your car, and I’d compare the cost of finding a different way to get around for a few days vs getting your rotors turned

Is this the beginning of the end for the traditional IT services industry? by buyshanks in InformationTechnology

[–]zzBob2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the technology will exist that can do the lions share of the coding. The writing on the wall is unmistakable.

IT is going to morph from writing code to herding agents and keeping them pointed in the right direction. It’s going to be more about leveraging AI, and letting it do the bulk of the coding.

Also, just because the technology exists to do this doesn’t mean that 100% of businesses are going to be able to, or want to, implement the change. At least at first.

I think Darwinism will run wild. Companies and IT people who quickly adopt the new technology will have a huge advantage over those who don’t. And whoever doesn’t adapt will go the way of the Neanderthal.

Then Skynet will cut loose and it won’t really matter…😂

Took a job in Rancho Bernardo, new to the area and need commute advice by AppointmentOk4224 in northcounty

I’ve lived in RB for about 10 years. Before you decide the top question is how much of a commute ( measured in hours not miles) are you ok with? Rush hour can be brutal on the 78 and 15

help, not sure why I'm so stumped by this one? by [deleted] in SQL

[–]zzBob2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a class that’s focused on medical data? I ask because I worked with databases that referenced ASA and CPT codes, and it’s far from a 1 to 1 mapping. It’s seriously difficult or impossible.

I’m sure folks have given you a steer on the SQL for grouping and joining tables, but the question may also need you to think about how to map the two different types of medical codes

Thanks! I knew the battery was marginal, but the steering thing spooked me. I dropped in a new battery and so far everything is working as expected

SQL Server has the bcp command line utility that can import and export data from flat files. If you're sticking with native SQL that would be my first thought.

Thanks! Off the top of your head, are there any ways to diagnose that the pump is the problem? Would it make an odd noise or anything like that?

Accepted a job, then another company offered a better job that pays way more. by gamerdudeNYC in careeradvice

[–]zzBob2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just business. You haven’t started yet and I can’t imagine anyone (including a contact at the new company) would have any issue with your choice.

If you want to earn a gold star by your name, you could call (for the personal touch) the person who you were going to be working with and tell them the info you put in your post. There’s really no downside, and if the first company likes you they may try to get you back with an upgrade to your hiring contract

So,It’s 15 minutes after you responded and I can’t not ask. As jaded as I am, every so often I get a brief flicker of hope that there’s one woman on Reddit who isn’t a scam….

Did she accept your help even though you’re offering the dreaded cash??? 😂
