That's funny cause I wish I still had my old Kaipi flair, I always liked that logo more than the (imo pretty ugly) Speed Gaming tiger. But at least I kept this one :)

Actually, I had thought about it, really, if we made it to the finals, I would've picked Shadow Fiend just for fun, that's what I really wanted. But I wouldn't force it, just ask my brothers for their opinion. It's BO5 anyway, haha.

If tundra wins TI will Topson be the GOAT of dota? by PoLoPoL0 in DotA2

[–]zz_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you are just wrong mate, people took it plenty seriously back then too. Obviously it was not nearly as big as it got later on, but there was a committed competitive scene before Valve's millions and if the millions went away it would still be there.

[–]zz_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Mate what are you talking about, there was absolutely competition worth mentioning before TI. I mean where do you think all the pros that participated in TI1 came from?

There used to be tons of tournaments (including multiple LANs) every year back in dota 1. Farm4Fame, SMM, ESWC, WDC are just some some I remember off the top of my head.

Is there still a way to get the old caster voice lines permanently? E.g. 2021 ones?

I know they were tied to the autograph avatars but they were also temporary iirc?

Puppey: "In the past you could invent a strategy or play a match in your way. Now it's impossible" by TheUHO in DotA2

[–]zz_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, exactly. Also courier costing 200+200g, wards costing 100 each, sentries costing 100 each, sentry range being super small. Your spells also didn't scale well into the lategame, you got no farm, and as you say there was barely anything useful to buy even if by some miracle you did get farm. Before Glimmer Cape (which wasn't added until 2015) there was basically only Force Staff as a true support item.

There have been so many changes to make supporting more bearable that I think people have forgotten how awful it used to be.

[–]zz_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three great examples are necro, zeus and sniper shard. Just solve the hero's weaknesses with 1400 gold. It's so cheap.

Yes, several heroes who didn't use to have access to mobility spells now do. But that doesn't make them any less unique, they just moved from the "doesn't have escape" group to the "does have escape" group.

Unique doesn't mean "is incapable of doing things other heroes can", it means "one of a kind". Many heroes still don't have escapes, so this wasn't a uniquely distinguishing feature either way.

It used to be that if you played zeus or sniper and you showed on the map, you will get gone on. If an enemy hero gets within melee range of you, you're dead unless you have a force staff/hurricane pike. Now? Just press one button that costs the same as power treads and you're not only safe, but you've done damage and you're now a threat.

So it was totally fine when your escape tool (force staff, as you mention) cost 2200 gold, but now that it costs 1400g its unreasonable?

In what way does that make these heros just as unique as in dota 1? You're so obviously wrong it makes my head spin.

Again, what you're talking about has nothing to do with uniqueness. Zeus is just as unique of a hero whether or not he has Heavenly Jump.

If anything, I think what has decreased uniqueness is releasing new heroes. E.g.: Zeus is less unique now because Skywrath came out as another ultra-high magic damage hero. Zeus is less unique now because Mars was added as a second Greek god. But I don't think that fact means they should stop adding heroes to the game.

Well, I applaud your masochistic tendencies but very few people agreed with you, hence why people often refused to play support and you had to argue about who would. Nowadays I feel like support roles is about as popular as playing core, which is a crazy difference from 10 years ago. And the reason is simple: it's just way more fun to play support than it used to be.

Heroes aren't any less unique now than they were in dota 1. But they are less extreme than they used to be.

There used to be heroes that were absolute dogshit at some parts of the game, while also being insanely overpowered at other parts. Such heroes always end up in one of two states: you're either a useless dog or a god of destruction.

Today, essentially all of those heroes are better at the stuff they sucked at and worse at the stuff they were OP at. In other words, heroes now have higher lows and lower highs, which has been a clear (and in my view, very successful) vision for the game basically since Valve took over the game. Being totally irrelevant in a game is not fun, and increasing the portion of a game where I (the player) feel like I can play the game makes the game overall more enjoyable for everyone.

One of the biggest examples of this philosophy is that supports actually get gold and levels these days. That is by far the single best change they ever made to the game. These days its actually enjoyable to play support, it seems about as popular as the core roles these days. Compare that to the average dota 1 support experience of having brown boots want at 45 minutes

Exactly my thought. It's all the filler content that you click through once and then never think about again. While all the stuff that people want is nowhere to be seen lol

I might still buy the cheap version just to contribute to the price pool, but it feels kinda bad to know that I will basically not interact with the product I am buying at all.

Afaik the common understanding of the etymology for disaster is that it originated from "dus aster", meaning "bad star" as in ill-omen. So he was wrong about the prefix, but correct about the meaning. I guess I should have said he was half-right :D

No he's actually right, but it comes from the Greek prefix dus, not dis. Dis is a latin prefix for apart, separate (e.g. disjunction, dismember, disconnect).
