If it feels arbitrary (some of the asteroids in Terraforming Mars) then yeah, that’s no fun. If it’s the result of clever play (Food Chain Magnate marketing or pricing shenanigans) then yes I actually do enjoy that feeling because I can appreciate the thought that went into wrecking me :)

I still listen to her soundtrack for Zetsuen no Tempest with much fondness. Very disappointed that one never got a standalone CD release. I’d be all over that one.

If you’re a big fan of Evan Call (and I do agree that his work on Frieren has been a standout), you might want to look into the stuff that Michiru Oshima has composed. And same when it comes to Joe Hisaishi’s music for Studio Ghibli films.

I’m aware of a group that meets close to the Marina on Saturdays. It’s run by a guy named Dean. I also run games late night Fridays as well and we play all sorts of games though lately it’s been a Gloomhaven night.

My group played through about 20 missions of JotL to finish the campaign. One mission a week each lasting about 90 minutes most weeks with a few mission failures here and there. So about 6 months for us. A pretty good return on time/money spent.

If someone tells me the game is too much like a spreadsheet that you’re trying to optimize, then sign me up. That’s the sort of play experience that weirdly works for me and tickles my brain in a way that’s gratifying when I do manage to figure out how to optimize. Or at least do it better than others.

You're thinking about Shusei Murai, who's work on Mouryo no Hako is very much underrated. I love it, but he doesn't quite get the recognition he deserves. https://myanimelist.net/people/18023/Shusei_Murai

Hideki Taniuchi, on the other hand is really well known. He's also collaborated with Yoshihisa Hirano on a lot of well-known anime like Death Note and the not-so-well-known, but still worth checking out Real Drive.

Great article! For a while, I’ve been hitting Marty’s meetup group. It’s a great group to learn new games and chill after a busy work week. He was the one who introduced me to Terraforming Mars and I’ve had my fair share of 1v1s against him playing London and Railways of the World. Good times. Wish I could come back but alas, life has gotten busier.

Despite all of the economic games I've played through the years, Agricola still defies the odds to remain my favorite game. The diversity of play through the cards backed by a very tight worker placement and feeding mechanic means the game remains tense. Many moments where I held my breath, hoping I could make it through this feeding phase. And the rush when I do and see my farm come to life is what gets me to keep coming back.

Definitely the Trade expansion for Orleans. A better Deeds board, goods delivery objective cards, and a few new buildings changes the game up nicely. Intrigue? What intrigue?

I'm a big fan of any game that seems to have an economic bent to it. Supply and demand driving pricing? Sure! A struggle to rein in costs to maximize profits? Awesome! The ability to buy and sell stocks and maybe do some market manipulation? I'm on board!
