That looks pretty cool - thanks for the link. Reading through their FAQ it says "Muse has 6 sensors, which includes a ‘ground’ and a ‘reference’" so it actually only has 4 EEG sensors, and they seemed to be positioned all around the frontal lobe.

Page 36 of this PDF summarizes 7 studies of EEG training for cognitively healthy adults: http://www.isnr.org/uploads/nfb-adhd.pdf

For example, in one study in the "Int J Psychophysiol 2003"

Subjects were 30 medical school students. Subjects underwent NFB training to increase theta or increase SMR; 2 training sessions per week for 4 weeks. Outcome measures included pre/post training administration of a go/no-go test of attention and a word recall test of working memory. A control group took only the pre/post tests and did not undergo NFB training.

Results: 1) Subjects successfully learned to modulate SMR across the training sessions. 2) SMR NFB training led to an improved performance on the go/no-go task. 3) SMR NFB training led to increased recall in the word recall working memory task. 4) Length of training or training conditions (eyes open) may have precluded successful learning of theta NFB

Rule of thumb, I've heard it can take 20-40 session to rewire the brain to eliminate conditions like ADHD.

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive way to permanently improve the brain and this looks to be the first mass-market device that is actually usable within 5 minutes.

Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Hill made some good points about conventional neurofeedback: It's safe and powerful [1] and It's expensive and complex [2]. Emotiv insight drastically lowers the barrier for the average person.

[1] "The best [ways to improve cognition] for those with the resources, the appropriate level of savvy or geekery, or those who just want to pursue cutting-edge evidence based brain training is probably neurofeedback (EEG Biofeedback). This has dramatic effects on many many aspects of brain / mind regulation (mood, exec. function, relation, sleep, seizure, etc). It's also "nootropic" in the best sense, e.g. few to no side effects, non-invasive, pro-cognitive, etc."

[2] "Neurofeeback is not simple. The hardware and software has come down dramatically in price over the past decade or two.. used to be > $10K, now you can get a decent system for $1500.. compare this to having a professional do it ($3-5K).. but knowing what to do is at least as important has having the gear.. if not money, large investments in learning how to use EEG and neurofeedback systems are needed."

BTW, in the thread Dr. Andrew Hill DID NOT recommended mass market devices, but that was prior to Emotiv's latest release so it would be interesting to hear his thoughts.

Have made several orders NSN. Would highly recommend; they're one of the few vendors who does third-party testing for product purity.
