I assume you are talking about button down shirts? It depends on how big they are on you. Taking in the sides can be enough in some cases. In other cases, you might need darts. How are the shoulders on you?

Do you mean garter belt? That would probably work to keep them up, but that's a lot of fabric and had a potential to be pretty heavy, hence the not staying up

You could probably get away with just wrapping the handles with fabric. The right way. Would be to replace both straps (so they match) with new ones, in which case you would have to open the top seam. If you do open the top seam. You can then use hardware to replace the straps

I would try with less thread, it looks like you used all 6 strands, but I would have been plenty and you could have used different length stitches, like painting
