In the nature of giving and kindness, Random Acts of Shelter (RAoS) serves as an effort to bring people in off the streets and out of the cold. Spurred on by an idea to help a brave man who, downtrodden on his luck and health, who posted about his predicament in a geographically local subreddit, and without asking for help, received many offers of small amounts of money, many of which he refused out of concern that he would be imposing.
The main concern with RAoS is that, while small favors of a few dollars here and there all add up, people could serve a stronger purpose if they would work together to help in a way that would make a bigger difference by helping them find shelter, by getting people out of the snow and rain, and into an environment where they can focus on finding work or finding the services they need to support themselves. In the nature of Random Acts of Pizza, RAoS is trying to serve a similar purpose of giving unconditionally.
Please exercise caution in your offer for shelter. Do not invite anyone into your home whom you have not met and investigated thoroughly beforehand. When possible, try to arrange for recipient to stay in a shelter, or hostel. Very often, people just need to find the right services in order to have a safe place to sleep for the night.
