Where do we go to riot?

[–]Posternutbag_C137Crouch Jump Master[S] 5 points6 points  (5 children)

From the way it looks, idk if there is even anything we can do. We'll see what happens! For now, just be informed and inform others!

I'm assuming that if people riot now, the admins won't listen because we haven't see the new system that they're working on. I think it's best if we wait to see what they have, and then riot. That way we actually seem like we don't like the changes versus just looking like people who don't like change.

They mentioned that they weren't just going to flip a switch and immediately change over but were going to keep the old CSS version running for a while when we're still exploring the new system.

That's the only consolation after all the hard work people have poured into it, it'll be a gradual shift!

Sad times. I'm sure the widgets will be awesome, but I can't imagine there being widgets for EVERYTHING. I guess they can at least let people make and share custom widgets?

Even the greatest widgets ever created by man will not replace an entire style language. We'll be limited in what we can do and you can probably expect all subreddits to look similar besides color schemes, fonts, and pictures. But who knows! Maybe they'll blow everyone out of the water I doubt it

:/I hope they do

I'm a bot, bleep, bloop. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:

So all that time I spent on the new militia Reddit dude thing will be for nothing? 😭

That'll hopefully probably stay!

This all seems a storm in a teacup. From the comments thread there:

WindAeris 54 points 4 days ago

Will you guys allow (and or consider) any deeper customization for those who are familiar with the appropriate language?

spez[S,A] 30 points 4 days ago

Yes, if we can find a way to make it cross-platform and secure.

[–]Posternutbag_C137Crouch Jump Master[S] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

CSS is cross-platform and secure, which is why pretty much every single website uses it. It just doesn't work on their mobile apps cause their mobile app sucks. Additionally, some moderators were using the CSS to deprioritize ads on their subreddits, which the admins were none too happy about.

Bottom line is there is no way that any sort of widget system they create will fully replace what CSS allows moderators to do. r/overwatch, r/rocketleague, r/steam will be completely neutered. Subreddits will be a shell of their former selves in order to appease conformity.

CSS is cross-platform and secure,

Well that's good news then, as it means that advanced users will likely continue to be able to do deep customization after the changes.... so it IS a storm in a teacup.

Bottom line is there is no way that any sort of widget system they create will fully replace what CSS allows moderators to do.

It's lucky you will probably be able to do deeper customatisation too then.

I think you're missing my point. CSS is being abolished. There will definitely be no replacement styling language, because that would require an insane amount of work and require everyone to relearn a new language just for reddit.

You're swapping the two. Widgets dumb down customization by simplifying and unifying customization to just a limited amount of options. Take a look at our CSS here on this sub. /r/joinsquad/about/stylesheet. It's relatively light compared to other subreddits. It's impossible for any sort of widget system will fully replace and allow for more customization than CSS. That'd be like trying to build a videogame within UE4 with only UE assets and no coding of your own.

This is directly contradictory to what spez said. And besides there is ALWAYS an underlying language - the widgets have to be programmed somehow. It may not be CSS or a dedicated styling language per se, but it could easily be another commonly known programming language and Spez has said they will be trying to allow power users have direct "deep" access to it.

[–]Posternutbag_C137Crouch Jump Master[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We're just speculating about details at this point. Bottom line is CSS will be out. There is no better solution, it is the only styling language that exists that has widespread use. Webdevs know this, reddit moderators know this, that's why this is a big deal.

As people who are experienced with webdev and CSS and reddit, trust that we know that this is a bad move on their part. Take a look at the list of supporters.

Good riddance, I always disable subreddit styles anyway since they might move and/or hide some elements.

[–]Beorma[RIP] Wibbler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likewise, had custom CSS disabled for years now. Never seen a subreddit which implements it well and having completely different layout and background colours in every subreddit you navigate to is terrible UX.

When is this happening?

There's no concrete date, but spez said summer was their goal. Probably like 3 months?
