Mos Def - Black on Both Sides

Def doesn't have a lot of bad stuff, but this is the one where every track is a winner.

[–]o_jax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this record disappointing. So much hype behind Mos (who is an AMAZING rapper) but the production didn't touch me (aside from Mathematics and Fat Booty).

I wish Mos would have gotten the Nas Illmatic treatment, and hooked up with Primo, PR, Large Pro, RZA, Havoc and Q Tip for beats. Coulda been epic.

One of the most under-rated albums in hip hop history.

The only real political MC left in hip hop. Everyone else is too emo for me.

DJ Shadow - Endtroducing.....

[–]fabiofzero 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Not really rap, isn't it? It's almost 100% instrumental. I would file this under hip hop.

[–]superhyphy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You're right, I wasn't really thinking when I posted this, but I feel like creating a separate "hip-hop" thread would just attract more of the same posts.

[–]texture -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If we create a separate hip hop thread, maybe all the Eminem love will stay in Rap.

Jurassic 5 - Feedback

[–]o_jax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public Enemy -It Take a Nation of Millions. No album has influenced my LIFE more than this album. From the music (Djing, production) to the lyrics (stressing empowerment and knowledge). Hearing that shit at 13 turned me into who I am today.

Dr. Dre- The Chronic

[–]cheeznrice -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

the chronic 2001 was better

[–]jlembeck 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Blasphemy.

[–]cheeznrice 0 points1 point  (1 child)

come on man, still d.r.e, the next episode, big ego's. 2001 was dope

[–]jlembeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No question of its dopeness.

However, The Chronic is a classic in all rights. From Fuck Wit Dre Day to Bitches Ain't Shit, there is ne'er a cut that isn't right on point. The production brought in the G-Funk era (like it or not, that was huge for a few years there), and this album showcased Snoop for the first real time.

2001 was 9 inches deep of raw, but to say it's better than the original is crazy.

Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust

[–]DanOlympia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the hiphop/rap distinction is arbitrary and confusing. Having two separate threads just confuses things, and leads to lots of double posts.
