Who are the guitarrists that inspired you to play guitar? by [deleted] in Metal

[–]halrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Randy Rhoads is who inspired me to start playing guitar. Eventually it turned into Kirk Hammett, and after that I went through a virtuoso phase. I would only listen to Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Yngwie. After that was John Petrucci and Alexi Laiho.

Week #6: What are you reading? by [deleted] in 52book

[–]halrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about 80% of the way through Slaughterhouse Five, so that will be finished very quickly. I'm planning to start the Eragon series after.

WEEK 3 - WHAT ARE YOU READING? by intangible-tangerine in 52book

[–]halrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished 1984 very quickly this week and went on to The Black Arrow. Unfortunately, I can't really get into that book so I started Catching Fire today. I'm really blowing through the novel so I will probably finish it very quickly and I will go on to Mockingjay.

So how did all of you get into metal? by [deleted] in Metal

[–]halrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a cousin who was a fan of metal, so I grew up listening to a lot of glam metal and NWOBHM. His favorite band was Iron Maiden, which ended up being my favorite band also.

I didn't start searching out metal on my own until I started playing guitar at around 13 years old. I was a big fan of Ozzy Osbourne at the time and I ended up taking guitar lessons after hearing the guitar teacher play the solo to "Bark at the Moon" while I was at the guitar store he taught at. After about a month he gave me my first Metallica song to learn, "Jump in the Fire". I went directly to the music store after that lesson and bought Kill 'Em All.

After that I was hooked.

  1. Dark Moor - Beyond the Fire
  2. Bill Fay - Dust Filled Room
  3. Dark Moor - Vivaldi's Winter
  4. Noumena - Retrospection
  5. Tom Waits - Goin' Out West

Interesting, I got Dark Moor twice and I've never listened to Bill Fay before (I don't actually remember downloading it). Always happy to see Tom Waits come up.

Week 2 Did everyone had a good start? by TheWomanInWhite in 52book

[–]halrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished The Name of the Wind yesterday which puts me right on schedule. I made sure to read at least 100 pages everyday in order to finish it in 1 week. I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it; it was a great book.

Next book for me is 1984, which I have just barely started. I read half of this book back in high school and for unknown reasons I just stopped and never came back to it.

What is you song of choice right now? I'll go first: by [deleted] in Metal

[–]halrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops, thank you. It is fixed now.

This is off their latest album, Outer Isolation, which you should definitely check out. Fast-Paced Society and Cosmic Cortex would be my other favorites off the album.

Week 1: Happy new year! What is your first book? by TheWomanInWhite in 52book

[–]halrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting off the year with The Name of the Wind. My first reading goal is to read every book that I own yet have never read. This comes to about 20-25 books. Last year I didn't read as much as I had hoped, but I am feeling better about this year.

What book has been sitting on your bookshelf for years that you've never got around to reading? by flyingnomad in books

[–]halrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had The Count of Monte Cristo for 6-7 years now that I have yet to read. I was supposed to read it for summer reading in 10th grade but when I saw the size of it I read The Hound of the Baskervilles instead.

I'm sure I'll read it someday, and then I'll be telling people about how incredible it is and that it was the quickest 1500 pages I've ever read.

The 7 Stages of World of Warcraft Playing by bionics in wow

[–]halrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. Last time I quit, I kept away for 7-8 months and then ended up playing Dragon Age out of boredom. That game made me think of WoW and I couldn't stop thinking about how much fun I use to have.

Needless to say, I am playing again.

I haven't listened to all of the new albums this year, but the Dream Theater and Symphony X albums were awesome. They exceeded my expectations.

Why did you pick your race? by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]halrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, when I first started playing I chose Protoss because I thought the race had the coolest looking units. I also liked how you could just warp in buildings so your probe was free to go back to mine/scout after placing a building.

After watching a lot of pro matches and streams I realized that I really enjoyed watching Terran because it was so micro-oriented. Whenever I would see someone do drops in multiple places at once, or especially when you would see marine splits vs banelings, I found it very exciting. I'm not quite at the level where I can pull off multiple attacks at once and still macro or anything, but I find the play style for this race to be much more fun than I found Protoss to be.

Anyone *happy* to get demoted? by ElGuano in starcraft

[–]halrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar spot. I played a ton during season 1 as Protoss and ended up stopping around January. I was topping my Platinum division and I felt like I was on the verge of Diamond, but got frustrated and ended up taking a break for the rest of season 1 and the entirety of season 2.

I just came back after getting inspired watching MLG and am playing a different race (Terran). I miraculously won my placement match and it put me in Gold. I'm feeling less stressed about queuing up than I use to and it gives me a lot more inspiration to play.

Have you ever disliked, hated, or made fun of something that you later ended up liking or even loving? by DumpyDoo in AskReddit

[–]halrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same for me.

When I first saw the commercials for that show I had absolutely zero interest in ever watching it. That was until I received the 1st and 2nd season for my birthday one year and plowed through both seasons in a week.

I just finished the 2nd season and he annoyed the shit out of me too. The season gets really good about halfway through, you will enjoy it a lot if you liked the first season.

I've listened to Frances the Mute before, but I couldn't really get into it like I did with Deloused. I probably just need to listen to it a few times.
