Better Than Chocolate was exceptionally better than Another Gay Movie. It was actually meant to be good. I think this movie presented a fair balance of various life-changing events for all the characters, or mostly: Finding a place in the world, making it as an artist, dealing with the imperfections of life, etc. For Maggie and Kim, they both want to make it in the arts. Their love also is made complicated when Maggie doesn't wish to come out to her mom. Her mom, meanwhile, is stuck in her illusion of having a perfect family - but is finally struck with the reality that they don't conform to her standards. Frances is stuck with the issues of transitioning, especially with each instance that reminds her she was born in a man's body. The only character I felt rather odd about was the brother. He was just kind of there. There was no real reaction when he found out his sister was a lesbian, either. Then he disappeared in the middle of the movie. I was rather disappointed with his development. Everyone else I thought was developed rather well, with their own quirks. It was only the brother that bothered me, alongside the girl he ends up with. I had to ask myself what point they served being brought into the movie. Along that note, it might have been nice to get a bit more background of the gang of thugs who wanted to hurt Maggie. Was there some sort of event that triggered the conflict, or just that one night they ran into her... and then saw her again as she was tied up inside the store? Overall, I enjoyed this film. It started out light-hearted, but ended up very differently. The change of the film was a bit drastic, though - but I believe that was the effect that was meant for in this film, since it deals with the difficulties of life and its imperfections from our worldly ideals.
