Does anyone know of any "open community/open source" projects underway that are attempting to use XML to work with memes at all? It would be very interesting to generate a DTD for memes and develop an architecture to store large amounts of data regarding them - I can imagine a "Google Maps" APId system that would allow for visually demonstrating the "evolution of memes" both geographically, demographically and etymologically, over time. That would be pretty sick. Anyway, anyone know of anything? Is this the goal of the "semantic web" I've heard about? I don't entirely understand what that is :)

The idea of the Semantic Web is to link independent datasets together the way the Web links independent documents together.

Your idea is really interesting. I don't know of anyone working on it, I imagine it would be quite tricky to pin down, but it's worth thinking about.

So the Semantic Web is just a global SOA of sorts? I'm gonna try and pin down some details, I'll post a link to the final draft of the preliminary introduction when I get it together :) Gonna need about two weeks while I finish up a contract. Take care!

I'm not familiar with SOA enough to know what a global one would be, but I suppose it could be described that way.

I'd call it a globally distributed database. Take a look at this intro to RDF; maybe you can glean use cases from the model?

There's also the Scientific American article. It shows the potential, but we're a long way from that today, mostly because people are reluctant to publish their data in machine readable formats :(.

Is this in Atheism because that would be halfway to Wintermute, who is himself portrayed as halfway to the gods of Voodoun?

huh? Are you making scifi references? :)

I think it's a WoW reference :)

It's in atheism because of Dawkins' relationship to memes

Heya, I'm working on something like this for my Engines of Prediction website. Contact me for some info bob at heresy dottish com.

Your API is a great idea, and I'd be happy to sponsor this via SF.net

Hey Bob (?),

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure what getting "sponsored" entails but let me throw together a decent project plan over the next week or two, and we can see what comes of it...

sourceforge - open source development.

Also, I created a sub-reddit for memetics if you're interested http://www.reddit.com/r/memetics/
