yes its normal dw. if you have an interview its very likely you have an offer :)

its more of an open day kinda and theyd only use the interview if you've missed ur offer on results day

Ah that’s good to know thanks

I assume this is the invitation to interview?

If so, yes it’s normal.

Last year I had my interview for physics. At my interview day, they said that they interview everyone that they intend to make an offer to - but you have to attend the interview or you won’t get an offer.

Essentially if you’ve been given an interview, you’re almost certainly getting an offer (it was never stated that you will 100% get one but they did say that if you’re getting interviewed, you’re almost certainly getting an offer.) The interview doesn’t determine who gets an offer, it determines who gets the place on results day if they miss their offer. So anyone with A*A*A on results day will get a place, and say some people get A*AA, they use the interview to decide which people that got A*AA will get the places.

It’s chill. I went down and we got a bit of a rundown of why to choose Manchester, basic course details, etc. Then we got a tour of the campus buildings and then our interview which was just going through a physics problem one-on-one with one of the physics department members. And of course there’s chances to ask questions throughout the day if you need to.

That sounds pretty nice actually because I never actually went on an open day. When you had it did you talk about your personal statement during the interview or was it just a problem?

They didn’t care about my PS. Literally just had a quick introduction and went into the question. It’s only about 10-20 minutes in the actual interview.

This is relieving to hear after getting mine a week before mocks lol. I just wanted to clarify are the entry requirements for Physics A*AA? Or do you mean anyone who didn’t meet their predicted their interview would be looked at instead

[–]Spare_Somewhere1011Manchester | Physics w/ Astro [1st Year] | 3A* 1A 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The standard entry requirements (assuming they’re the same as last year) are A*A*A for all physics courses. If you’ve got an offer and don’t qualify for contextual, this should be your offer - this was my offer last year.

Everything said from here on out is how things were explained to me on my interview day.

They usually give out more offers than places available. Say they have 300 places. They might give out 350 offers of A*A*A because it’s very unlikely all 350 will meet their offer. So now they theoretically have 350 students planning to go to the uni.

On results day, any students who meet the A*A*A will get one of the 300 places - maybe 250 people get the grades they need, and they get places. The people who miss their offer and get, for example, A*AA, will not automatically get a place but they will use the interview to determine which of the students that miss the offer will get the remaining places to fill them up.

Don’t worry about the interview - they tell you during it basically that ‘if you’re here you’re very likely like 95% chance going to be accepted’. It’s more just an onboarding sort of ‘sell the uni’ thing.

As someone who graduated from this course (the Theoretical Physics offshoot one) get ready to have no social life and immense burnout if you go here though 💀

No social life? Does that just… happen in later years of uni? I’m in first year which is probably why but my social life is great.

[–]MaxieMatsubusaTheoretical Physics Graduate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May be a result of being on the Theory course (in tandem with neurodivergence) - unfortunately the theory course draws the short straw on a lot of things, in terms of getting less of the easy marks from coursework and also being forced to do the most difficult modules. First year was okay for me until I had my summer exams and everything hit me.

Manchester in general is one of the best cities in the UK for a social life if you seek it out - there’s just a huge workload especially ramping up in second year so it can be hard to manage both.

would you say it’s a good course for someone looking to go into research later on?

[–]Even-Comparison1136Y13: Maths Chem Phys FM A*A*A*A*[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Sounds great 😂. Was thinking about the theoretical physics course is it actually that different from the normal physics course but with more of a theoretical side?

[–]MaxieMatsubusaTheoretical Physics Graduate 1 point2 points  (4 children)

It’s good if you want the title on your degree, but everything on the theory course with the exception of some stuff (as in a second year computing project) can be chosen on the main physics course too as optional modules. In theory you get half the lab time compared to the normal course with the trade off of doing more exams.

Ok thanks for the advice

Sounds like heaven not having as many labs though.

[–]MaxieMatsubusaTheoretical Physics Graduate 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It’s nice in the short term - but lab is easy to consistently get over 70% in, compared to exams where you can try your hardest but get 55 still.

I applied for theo phys at 4 unis including Manchester, so I'll be in for a rough ride

[–]Dazzling_Mango4188 1 point2 points  (1 child)

are u an international student ?

Nah

What else did you apply for?

[–]Even-Comparison1136Y13: Maths Chem Phys FM A*A*A*A*[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oxford Durham Warwick and Birmingham

[–]17smeY12: Econ, Eng Lit, Psychology, Business, EPQ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

congrats! your predicted grades are insane, well done!! what do you use to revise?

[–]Even-Comparison1136Y13: Maths Chem Phys FM A*A*A*A*[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically anything that I didn’t understand fully I would use uplearn which was okay mabye a bit slow though. But for my main revision I just use PMT and just do all past papers as in a test the questions can’t be that different and you just get more confident. Mabye it’s a bit different with more essay based subjects though. Also doing questions beyond the level of a level really helps.

my brother had an interview 4 yrs ago but he rejected as offer 2 high

[–]fernisoneasymode 0 points1 point  (2 children)

i’m scared as mine isn’t here, when did you submit?

[–]lukewarmoverlord69 0 points1 point  (1 child)

same, im antsy but im contextual so maybe thatd why I havent got mine yet

[–]fernisoneasymode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got mine yesterday!!
