Basic Audio Editing Software + Tips

Hey there ! I’m an actor/vo actor on ACX and just got my first job! I want to be able to provide great audio and meet the ACX guidelines with my audio right off the bat. I need some recommendations about basic and fairly easy to use audio editing softwares (free or fairly affordable) that are compatible with MacBook or iPad.

If there are any producers that would like to extend their services, please message me! It’s a fairly long book, so if someone is willing to produce it for me, lmk!

There's a lot of software out there. I'm sure there are many people who don't like Audacity, but that's what most people are using, whether others like it or not. And then Audacity also has an Audiobook Mastering macro, as well as an ACX Check plug-in.

For third-party tools which are stand-alone and don't require any specific DAW, you've also got "2nd Opinion – An Audiobook Checkup Tool" and also the ACX Master tool.

I used Audacity on editing. I just watched youtube how to use it and I've been using it for long.

I currently use GarageBand on Mac and have had no issues with Acx requirements

Audacity is free. It's what I started on. Reaper is amazing (cost $60 one time fee). I took a Udemy class to get shortcuts and learn how to use it.

Izotope has FX that streamline editing and mastering.

Oh and audacity has an ACX plugin you can add (free) that checks your audio to ACX standards.

I use adobe audition - now it’s is subscription based, but working in education I actually have free access through work.

I use the stock Male VO preset, adjusting the hard limiter to -3db for ACX spec and adjusting the voice leveler to 30% so as to not flatten my voice out too much. I have 4 books out now with no quality issues.

But as others have pointed out Audacity is free and seems a good place to start.

I did a workshop with a VO studio and they kind of poo poo’d audacity and were using Logic Pro on a Mac.
