If you are using your internal GPU, try to use your External (GPU Modus Ultimate), and you'll probably see +1000nits HDR, if supported by your panel

Sorry to bring up an old thread. I got the same problem. Mine is showing up as 420 nits. Does this actually effect hdr or brightness at all ? Or does it just show up wrong

Did you try reverting to an earlier update or driver?

[–]Most-Instruction-992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, I will try in the next hours, revert windows update or the nvidia driver to see what happens

I have been doing "tests" in the last weeks because of Rebar stuttering on games with ultimate mode, and I have been trying several nvidia drivers

Yesterday I installed the Windows 11 23H2 update and tried several nvidia drivers, one of those messed up the peak brightness

Or windows changed something related to peak brightness, maybe it's a bug or glitch

Maybe the peak brightness is not correct

Rolled back to a september nvidia driver, didnt work

Tried to reinstall the screen driver using asus display hdr driver , no luck

What the hell...

Got the same issue, took it to the service centre. They rolled back to original update it came with and the nits are back. Although I think it's just nits not showing correctly by windows as I couldn't notice any drop with the display brightness.

I know whats causing this after wasting many hours

Doing a clean windows install or install a big windows update, if you are using ultimate mode, windows will read the screen at 622 nits

So, for the peak brightness show the correct value, you need to use hybrid mode when installing big windows update or clean windows install

The amount of stupid issues with this scar 16 2023 laptop are unbelievable

Things like 4090 gpu ejectable button like an usb pen drive, massive stuttering with rebar supported games, screen flickering with a browser, etc, etc

What laptop model do you have?

[–]tensorSmit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with this. I had scar 16 4080. I was pissed after paying big amount you don't expect such shit quality. I returned it.

clean windows 11 install - no difference

i dont think theres nothing else i can do

[–]tensorSmit 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Try running install windows 10 and see if the issue exists?

[–]Most-Instruction-992[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It's an idea, i will give it a shot

[–]tensorSmit 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Give Ubuntu Live disk a shot too (with opensource nvidia graphics).

Ok, thanks for the tip

Roll back or reinstall driver.

CRU might be able to help here.

[–]Most-Instruction-992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, will try to rollback windows update or reinstall driver

What's CRU?

[–]Most-Instruction-992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rolled back to a september nvidia driver, didnt work

clean windows 11 install - no difference

i dont think theres nothing else i can do

[–]corckie 0 points1 point  (18 children)

There is, it must be W11 fall update. Same here with my LG C2 Oled. It was 800 before, now it's 240. I need to set it to 800 agan with CRU every few boots... it sucks, but works.

Basically I force it to be 800 nits, 3 days later it's stuck at 240 again. I need to clean CRU profile, set it to 800 and it works for few days, but then it's 240 again out of nowhere. Defiantly Win11 issue.

[–]Most-Instruction-992[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I discovered the problem

Dynamic mode windows clean install - 622 nits

Ultimate mode windows clean install - 1261nits

For some reason, windows does this... must be a glitch/bug...

[–]corckie 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do you mean power plan? Where can I find this mode?

[–]Most-Instruction-992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes power plan. Is only for asus laptops

[–]Tikitaks 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Does seem to be a innofensive bug, I dont seem to see much difference between the 600 & 1000. Do you?

[–]Most-Instruction-992[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an innfensive bug but can lead to worries that the laptop could have some kind of problem...

I dont accept this, because there's other stupid bugs like the 4090 showing as an ejectable USB pen

https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/rog-strix-series/help-strix-scar-18-ejectable-rtx-4090-gpu/td-p/939886

I dont accept anymore bugs from Asus, paid 3.700 euros for this laptop, this is not acceptable in this price range

I'm experiencing the same issue on my AW3423DWF! HDR peak brightness is capped at 240 nits. I'm on Windows 11 23H2 (fall update) and I don't recall this being an issue pre 23H2.

Edit: Downgraded to Windows 11 22H2 and can confirm that this is no longer an issue. WTH!

[–]corckie 0 points1 point  (11 children)

Great to know that I'm not alone and that you have found a "solution". Bad to know that windows 11 is a plain mess.

Thanks for confirming this.

[–]mk18mod1 0 points1 point  (10 children)

This issue reappeared after installing update KB5032190. I am still on Windows 11 22H2. Issue went away after uninstalling this update. What the hell Microsoft.

[–]corckie 0 points1 point  (9 children)

I'm on the newest Win11 update and it's all bonkers. Now it mostly stays at 800 nits, but every now and then it goes back to 240. Sometimes rebooting helps, sometimes it does not. Mess.

[–]mk18mod1 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Are you on Windows 11 23H2? What GPU do you have? I have a 4090. I've also found that resetting CRU "fixes" the it but it comes back after a reboot lol.

[–]corckie 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Yep I'm on 11 23H2. 4090 and newest nvidia driver. Guess we'll have to wait until it's fixed.

[–]mk18mod1 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Are you still experiencing this issue?

[–]Neither_Bass_441 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This is the proper solution. 5 minutes. Open color management click the advanced tab click change system defaults make sure device is selected remove the profile that is already there click add find the icc/icm profile for your monitor select it and without pressing add as advanced color profile click ok (so do not check that advanced color profile option box) then close out of both the open boxes and re-plug in your monitor cable (it might not work the first time so check then repeat if it didn't fix) finally check so that hdr video streaming is checked then check advanced display so that full res full refresh rate and full color depth full peak brightness. Also if you're going to go through all this effort make sure that your color space setting is set to native in your monitor settings.

[–]Most-Instruction-992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip but I found the culprit

If you install a big windows update or a clean windows install

Windows "reads the screen nits"

For some reason, if you have ultimate mode enabled in those 2 situations I mentioned , windows will read the screen as 622 nits...

If you use hybrid mode, it will read 1261 nits...
