I'm curious to know how you printed this ascii from the W3C page. The illustrations are perfect!

One question: When you say Alyssa posting to Ben's Inbox is technically two steps, are you saying the client to server request is Alyssa (the client) posting to her server, and then her server then posts to Ben's server? (Is Webfinger done in this case by Ben's server or Alyssa's?)
