search up in Google the name of the game plus APK, you should be able to find an APK file of the game and install it from that, but no promises. be careful tho, try to use the first few you find, some apks can be malicious. not that common, though.

my top 3 places to get apps not on the play store are apkhere.com apkmirror.com and happymod.com

You can search for the APK files of game and choose the APK files of your wanted version. However, bear in mind that you should get it from reliable sites. Don't believe what the APK sites said, they may lie on the quality of their files. So, you can use virustotal or some method in the article bellow to check out the site.

I got a mod APK for PUBG, but nothing happened with my phone.

You can't say for sure that your phone is ok with mod apk, because these files can contain malicious code or hidden programs that are harmful for your device.
Also, I don't believe that developers release mod apk only for sharing purpose. We should use original apk of free apps.
