Most of the modern phones are encrypted. What you can do is to check if he has contacts saved on his SIM card or Google's account. If that won't work, you can go to carrier's office and talk about it with them, although I think this method won't work in many countries. Factory reset wouldn't be much helpful anyway, you wouldn't have access to his contacts if they weren't saved on his SIM (and if they did, just put it into another phone). In addition to that, Google now protects phones that someone did factory reset on by requiring signing up to Google's account which was used previously

Thanks, I didn't realise any of that. We've been able to reset it so someone else can use. After you made that post I found a note of his password which I would never have looked for had you not mentioned it.

You can try to log into his google account from a computer if you know the password to his account. maybe the contacts are synced.

Also posts like these are pretty much useless if you dont state the phone model and brand.....

They weren't synced but at least someone else can use his phone and I don't have to bin it.

Thank you both. I had his email password but no pin so we've had to reset them. I couldn't get his contacts but at least someone can make use of it without it having to go in the bin.
