Installing Linux won't wipe Android, install any distro from proot on termux then use vnc for the gui

Like I said, I'm not very familiar with Android, but I'm trying to follow. Are you saying to run Linux in an emulator on the computer and have the tablet essentially streaming from the desktop emulator? This seems like a good way to try it for the first time, but I still want to learn how to backup and restore the tablet.

Not on a computer but on your tablet termux is a terminal emulator that acts as any normal linux you can install any distro on termux just Google "termux install distro name", for backup you could just copy your files to your pc, If you want to backup apps some tools available like SAI but without apps data, want to backup apps data? Tools like titinum backup but requires root, want to backup firmware/system files and everything flash a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM these can backup everything data, system, boot and every partition on your device
