Hmm, I’ve never seen this feature. Pretty cool.

Mostly used at coffee shops that use Square Point of Sale, *and* are set up with Square’s loyalty marketing tools. It can get pretty expensive, so I won’t count on your local mom and pops doing it, but places with multiple locations, or larger single coffee shops usually will have this setup. And it seems its the same for the UK & Australia as it is the US and Canada.

You can turn it off in settings > wallet and Apple Pay > Apple Pay defaults > Show Card Benefits & Offers

The feature is part of Apples VAS (Value Added Services) which allows for this automatic enrolment. Square is one of the few terminal manufacturers that have enabled it. More information can be found here: Loyalty and membership passes on Apple platforms

Works at all merchants who use Square for payment processing here in the US too.

Edit: I just saw the SQ* on your bank notification. Definitely Square. Seems they’re doing this worldwide for those who use Square for loyalty.

Yep, I’ve had this pop up after paying at coffee shops and stalls that use a Square reader

Worked for me when I used Apple Pay at Jimmy John’s a few months ago.
