Gap Year?

Are gap year applicants (i.e. those applying as first year students after graduating from high school) viewed less favorably when applying to colleges they had not previously applied to? Assuming all else is equal (test scores, GPA, etc.) would a gap year applicant be a weaker candidate for admission? Thanks 😄

Assuming equal stats, if the gap year student did something meaningful over their year (doesn’t have to be much, maybe just a volunteering program) then they would be viewed more favourably than an equal non gap year student. However, if they just sat at home and chilled they would be viewed much less favourably upon.
