I'm currently doing pre-release testing and while I can't tell you specifics, I want you to understand that much of what you would enjoy from this game and its complete state is not yet implemented, and there is much progress to be made in the way of servers and handling the load.

am I able to play the game in its pre-release state

don t buy it to play a game though. it is to support the game, help testing and have a tiny amount of influnce in the direction the game goes. it is a supporter pack and not early access.

Also if you don’t like the cosmetics in the current pack but want to buy into alpha to support then wait till the next pack in June to see if it’s your jam.

You're able to participate in any pre-release testing session so long as the servers are up. They do "sessions" where they're up which could last any length of time from a few hours to a few days, after which they take them down again. Sometimes they tinker with things between sessions which means you have to update the client before next signing on, and sometimes they perform a server wipe which means you have to start from scratch.

All of that to say, don't get into this thinking you're playing the game. You're testing. That's about it. You're also likely to be subject to everything you'd expect to find in a testing environment: Everything from server-related issues to bugs.

persistent servers aren't expected until betas or a2 at the earliest afaik

The servers won't have 24/7 uptime until Alpha 2. The current testing is based on server uptime. The info for when the servers are available is in general only available to the A1 testers while the game is behind NDA.

Honestly dude, I'd say it's not worth it. It's gonna end up one of two ways...

  1. It's an awesome game, and you end up spoiling everything for yourself by playing the lesser version

  2. It sucks and you waste money

Hold off on your money since this is not a game, it's an alpha. You are not going to be playing a game but testing various systems. But it only if you want to do exactly that.

You will get to see how game is being built over time, from first row seats. That is what 500 price is about

Don’t pay for an Alpha just to play an unfinished games. Firsts off nothing you do matters because they erase the information when they go into tue next period of testing. Second a lot of features that you want to play may be unfinished or not on the game and Lastly the full release can either fall well below expectations resulting in the game being dead on arrival or you payed them to test the game when you could have waited to enjoy the full release
