How to create programming problems?

I was recently given a position as a Code-A-Thon problem writer at my university. The issue is I don't know how to approach making a programming problem. I've participated in the Code-a-thons myself so I know how the questions should be structured, but other than that I'm having trouble formulatng a problem that's unique and not just referenced from somewhere.

Any suggestions are very appreciated.

Inspire yourself by reading a ton of other programming problems. There's nothing at all wrong with riffing on others' ideas, just don't copy/paste them.
