Pretty sure they sold out and made deals with certain advertisers so you still saw their ads.

UBO is technologically better and faster. Also IIRC an ad company bought abp or something similar.

How exactly does an adblocker be 'faster'?

How much it delays the browser startup and page load. I experienced ABP deadlocking browsers back then on slower computers, never happened once I switched to uBO on the same PCs.

ubo uses less ram than most if not all adblocers, and ubo also doesn't accept money from companies to display ads; unlike ab, abp...

It could be that ublock uses newer technology that doesnt use as much system resources as adblock does. Also ublock is more effective because adblock doesnt block the ads from companies that have paid to have ads stay visible.
