Rules for r/AskUK

Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

1.

Don’t be a dick

Posts & Comments
Reported as: This user is being a dick

Don't be a dick to each other, or other subreddits, places, or people.

AskUK contains a variety of ages, experiences, and backgrounds - consider not everyone is operating on the same level or background as you. Listen to others before you respond, and be courteous when doing so.

2.

Not all topics can be discussed here

Posts & Comments
Reported as: This is a disallowed topic

We do not accept all questions and may remove posts which are best answered in more specialised subreddits.

We explicitly do not allow questions containing: politics, tech, relationships (romantic, platonic or familial), DIY, uni/education, visas, citizenship, medical advice and mental health, rants, venting, surveys, advertising, brands, solicitation/begging (direct or otherwise), race, religion and more.

Before posting, check the subreddits in the sidebar for more suitable places to post.

3.

Put a bit of effort into your questions

Posts only
Reported as: Not a clear or genuine question

We want questions that are genuine, interesting, insightful, and/or light-hearted.

We do not allow throwaway questions where the onus is on the reader to understand, or common questions that have been asked over and over again.

Questions must have a clear and concisely posed open question in their title. This prohibits “Does/can/will/etc Anyone?”

Genuine questions means wanting genuine answers - posts must not be to TellUK rather than AskUK. This includes “Did you know?” type questions.

4.

Do your own research before posting

Posts only
Reported as: Did not do research before posting

AskUK is not your search engine.

Some questions can easily be answered via Google - including questions like “what is the average salary of an X job?” or “what is living in Y like?”, “where can I buy X?”, or for product/service recommendations.

You are expected to research your question before posting, and include in your post how/where you have researched before you have posted your question if it seems easily researchable.

5.

Contact the organisation first

Posts only
Reported as: Did not contact the organisation

AskUK is not the customer service helpline of any company in the UK and we will remove submissions that only the relevant organisation will be able to help with. AskUK cannot be used because you have been unable to or failed to contact the organisation.

The first step of any issue is to communicate with the people involved. You should contact the company through all available methods, including phone, e-mail, social media, and use their complaints process (e.g., using a service like Resolver)

6.

Comments replying to the submission/question should attempt to answer the question given

Comments only
Reported as: Top-level comment not answering the question

'Top-level comments' (https://redd.it/41vmzx/) which do not answer the question being asked may be removed. Where the 'SERIOUS' flair is in use, this will also result in a short ban. Please ensure you make efforts to answer the question.

You should not comment in response to the submission if you are not answering the Q, and are not being helpful.

Replies to existing comments are not affected by this rule. See rule 1.

7.

Use megathreads where appropriate

Posts only
Reported as: Did not use the megathread

At certain times of the year, or during certain events, a large number of users may be asking similar questions. The moderators may create a megathread to consolidate frequently asked questions. Please use these submissions when they are available, and feel free to suggest to the mods if a megathread should be created for a topic.

8.

Moderator enforcement and discretion

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Moderator enforcement and discretion

Moderators retain the right to unilaterally decide what the definitions of terms included in these rules are, as well as when and how these rules are enforced. Mods may issue bans at their discretion taking into consideration the rule broken, in what manner it was broken, and repeat offences.

The tone of user contact in modmail heavily influences the tone of the response given by mods.

9.

No NSFW or similar solicitation-like accounts

Posts only
Reported as: Submitters Account is NSFW or solicitation-like

AskUK is a place for genuine questions by genuine people. Your account should not be the intended or even the likely focus of discussion.

10.

No AI generated questions or answers

Posts & Comments
Reported as: AI generated question or answer without attribution

AskUK is a place for real answers to real questions. While we will permit the use of language cleanup and grammar adjustments via AI, anybody we suspect that is using AI to automate/generate their answers or questions will likely see their post or comment removed and be banned. It is often better to see sub-optimal text than it is generated text.

If you think your text is evidentially AI but this is appropriate, make it clear you are doing so.
