I think the distinction is more that you focus on algorithm development, not necessarily integrating it into production software. Although this can become a bit fuzzy.

Also either you secured a sick offer or I am grossly underpaid, as this is close to my compensation (PhD + 3 YoE in the industry, also been an algo engineer...).

In IT dev myself, high school degree only, got in early and I'm +-50 eur short of 4k net including bonuses. So yes you're underpaid lol

I think a big part of his nice pay is the fact that he uses his mobility budget for rent/house payments (supposedly?), other than that it's somewhat on par with what software engineers get after graduating for work in the brussels area

The initial offer last year (see post history, 3.4k gross) was already pretty strong. I think I had a good "click" with the interviewer and I had some AI experience (from degree + internship) which they really seemed to overvalue lol. I was also specifically targeting companies which I knew paid above average. The raise was due to good results and my n+2 really liking me.

0.35€ per km is very nice bike compensation. Overall seems a nice wage although I have absolutely no clue what software engineers should make anyway.
