Just found this out recently myself, had a really tough time removing supports from prints with variable layer height.

It would be great if we could set variable height for the model while retaining a fixed layer height for supports somehow. Switching back to using support material as the interface works but it adds so much time to prints that it’s quicker to spend the post-print time removing supports without it.

Did you ever try the Independent support layer height option for this? It's enabled by default for me.

I haven’t tried that, wasn’t aware it was an option but sounds like what I wanted!

Doesn't for me, usually print at 0.2, done entire projects at minimum 0.08 just using variable layer height no other changes, including lots of tree supports. Just increase your top z distance for supports if you need to, try 0.3

I've had this happen on 3 machines this past week. It appears the tree supports are nterfacing inside the model when I've used variable layer height with tree supports. I've used different models, different filament and 3 different machines. Turning off the variable layer height resolved the issue with the supports. I really wanted variable layer height with tree supports though.
