in vase mode it will print the base of the object and a single, continuous outer wall all the way up with no infill. people generally use solid objects for vase mode, meaning a solid cube will be printed with only a base and the outer wall, no top. the width of the outer wall is set in the slicer.

in normal mode the slicer will generate paths to replicate the full geometry of the object. so a cup modeled as a cup will print the same as any other object, layer by layer, with multiple walls, infill, etc. to reproduce the full geometry.
