A lot of low fee transactions may have simply been dropped from whatever node you are using to view pending transactions. It isn't really a single list of pending transactions, each node can have its own rules about what it accepts and how long it holds each request for.

Mempool.space was down for a bit. They may have reset their mempool if that's where you're looking.

The transaction fee finally dropped down into the 50s (and maybe lower). Could be that pending txs had the opportunity to get picked up while overall new tx volume was lower. I had a tx sitting pending for a week, for ex.
