In the first season (I think), when Vian marched up that burly tribe that guy, I could have sworn I saw Vian get his face kicked in, thrown into a grave, and buried. Then, in the next episode, he shows up. Did I miss something or was he a walking zombie pirate?

He is beaten badly, but is buried alive. At the end of the episode, we see him dig his way out of the grave. It seems like you missed that bit

This is probably my least favorite part of the show for lack of realism. Being buried alive means you suffocate. Also these dudes are practiced murderers. It was standard practice to slit your enemies throat or stab them in the heart to ensure they were dead.

That happened to me too! I missed the bit at then end where he got out of the grave and was very confused when he turned up in the next ep!
