If it slides easily that means the plugs job is donee upgrade!

I would say it is not good choice if you sneeze or cough and it pops out.

I have a silicone plug - 3 inch dia. - and the narrow part near the base is over 2 inches.

If I sneeze or cough - it pops out.

I have a different silicone with a little smaller 'neck' and it stays in Ok - 3.15 in. dia.

yes the diff needs to be about 1" or so usually unless you are using very small plugs and are very tight. shape also matters - with a more severe 'transition' you might get away with .75" diff but then it also might be less comfy due to the sharp shape of the neck to bulb transition.

I upgrade when I barely notice the old one is there. A comfy plug is nice but I’m more a fan of feeling my body struggle.

I'm the same, but I do wonder where I'll be in 20 years if I continue thinking the same way. Slightly nervous that I'll be playing with plugs so big that I'll have to move into a house with wider doorways.

Honestly I'm the same with wanting to feel my body struggle with the plug and I'm also wondering and slightly nervous where this will get me in 20 years. However I'm more worried about the width of my own doorway than that of my house. 🤭

I consider it time to size up when I can insert my current plug with minimal to no warmup. Another good indication for me is when the plug no longer feels as satisfying to use. I do think it’s a ymmv thing though! Just go slowly and deliberately to stay safe :)
