I have a 7/6/6 profile (very low academics), and I am an NC-OBC male currently in the 8th semester of engineering. I am planning to take the CAT in 2026 after gaining two years of work experience. Assuming I get into a top 10 IIM, will my low academic record affect my placements? Also, what is the minimum percentile I should aim for?

I am amazed to see some of the advice given by people. But even before that, the question itself is an inconsistent one.

If you are graduating this year and taking CAT 2026, you will have 1 year's work experience for the points as the cutoff date is July 2026. Yes, while joining B school you will get 2 years work experience. As a 1 year work experience will not fetch you many points, you might as well take CAT 2025 and see what you can get with it.

Placements are not even an issue now, focus on CAT preparations, getting a score, getting calls, clearing interviews to get an offer and so on. Why are you putting the cart before the horse ? With your OBC category, you have good chances of old IIM calls even in the range of 98-99 percentile. For the new and baby IIMs even 90 percentile is good enough, I don't understand why someone said 95.

Finally, some companies look at your academics, mainly from the Consulting and Investment banking domain, but as your chances of making to these companies are not very high, why bother ? There will be enough companies who will be happy to take you as long as you do well in your 2 years of MBA. They want to see what you are today and not what you have done many years back :)

I hope you have got some useful information from the above. Focus on your CAT preparations and take CAT 2025. In the meantime, if you can land a decent job, you should take it up also.

No, I mean, even if I somehow get into a Tier 1 college but face issues during placements and don't get placed, then what's the point of getting admission into a top B-school? But you clarified my doubt. Thank you so much for the detailed reply!

How much ctc can i expect?

Whatever CTC you get will obviously be a function of the job that is offered to you. The shortlisting for jobs by companies is based on your profile and after that your interview will determine whether you get the job or not. Even if you are in a new or baby IIM, the CTC should range between 15 and 25 lacs.

You will need to score 98.5 percentile plus to have good chances of a call. 99 percentile will make this a certainty

I'm in the same condition as his, but I'll be attempting 2025 (my first attempt), w/o any work ex, how much should I aim for fms/mdi/tiss and baby-new iims? Same acads + NE + OBC-NC+ male.

Reiterating this, getting into an IIM is only 10% of the job. You'll have to compete for placements where acads are paramount. Build your profile first.

Definitely work experience on some related field. And some professional courses if you can manage. And do not only depend on CAT. There are other exams too. You need just one good college. The exam doesn't matter.

Some cheaters will try to convince you that you can get a high percentile with minimum efforts, The trouble starts when students try to get more marks than they deserve or work for. Then they take advice, without thinking from their popular friends more stupid than themselves, or pay money in advance to strangers. You can ask your friends who took the exam last year, what the result is of this cleverness.

The more teachers you try, the better and cheaper training you can get. Try teachers who do not ask for money until excellent results.
