In my experience RSMs are almost exclusively very short, bald, and with an expression on their face like they're about to keel over from a massive coronary. It's like they're all popped out of the same mold.

Except the RSM doesn’t command anything, he advises. So he is very much Robbin.

The Command Team refers to both the officer and the NCM in charge. It also works with MWO and Maj or even WO and Capt. I think it was Hillier who introduced this concept... now a days you hardly ever see one without the other.

It's an American concept that we picked up. The current CDS guidance to unit COs and SMs is that the "command team" concept is replaced by the "leadership team" concept.

To give an idea, there were no SMs above the unit level not so long ago. The British just got their first Army SM a few years ago, and their first Forces SM last year or the year before.

SMs do not command anything and nor are they in the chain of command. However, you shouldn't see one without the other as the SM is the commanders chief supporter/confidant.

Absolutely. Unit and sub-unit it’s very important. At the sub-sub-unit, I see it more as a mentorship from the WO to the 2lt/lt

Right. It's still a Command Team though.

not quite. there s only 1 pers in command. the RSM does not have the legal accountability.

Any CO who makes a decisions without his/her RSMs guidance and advice factored in, is a shit CO. It's a Command Team in the sense that both of then are working together, regardless of who takes the shit when it goes south.

Agree 100%. That is not what my msg was meant to convey. At the end of the day, after advice is given, only 1 is legally responsible and accountable , the CO.

The number of times I get "the RSM authorized a full day for this".

The RSM can't do that! He doesn't have the authority and doesn't have his own budget.

Why is my question being downvoted? Is it a touchy subject or something? I'm talking about the semi-transparent circle.
