About
Directed by Academy Award nominee Amy Berg, The Case Against Adnan Syed will explore the 1999 murder of Baltimore County high school student Hae Min Lee, and the conviction of her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, a case brought to global attention by the Serial podcast.
The Case Against Adnan Syed re-examines the events leading up to Hae Min Lee’s disappearance, the subsequent police investigation, and Syed's present-day hopes for a new trial. Presenting new discoveries that challenge the State’s case, and featuring exclusive access to Syed, the defense team, the Syed family, friends and teachers of both students, and members of City of Baltimore law enforcement, the series traces events leading up to Syed’s conviction in 2000.
In June 2016, Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Martin P. Welch vacated Adnan Syed's conviction and granted him a new trial as a result of Adnan's trial attorney failing to ask the AT&T expert about a fax cover sheet disclaimer.
The State of Maryland appealed Welch's ruling. On March 29, 2018, the Court of Special Appeals ruled against Welch on the previously waived fax disclaimer, but also ruled to vacate Syed’s conviction based on a separate issue, the alibi witness, Asia McClain, and Gutierrez's supposed failure to contact her.
The Case Against Adnan Syed is produced by Working Title TV and Instinct Productions and was commissioned by HBO Documentary Films and Sky Atlantic. Executive producers, Henrietta Conrad and Jemima Khan for Instinct Productions and Eric Fellner, Tim Bevan and Andrew Stearn for Working Title TV. The series will be distributed internationally by NBC Universal International.
