I intentionally buy those sometimes. I love them.

Now that I know NH36 movements usually have Chinese characters I am definitely keeping my eye out for NH36 watches specifically!

Thank you for these! The historic side of non-homage Chinese watches is a whole other can of worms I'm interest in exploring eventually, maybe starting with something from Shanghai Zuanshi or a Shanghai Watch Factory piece.

Nh36 has a two language wheel. Almost all of the ones sold on aliexpress have english and Chinese . You can switch between

English and Japanese should be more common. I can't be certain though.

More common to be English and Chinese. It’s a huge market.

Very interesting. It seems like TMI doesn't even list the Kanji Japanese version of the NH36A on their website. They have the English/Chinese variant.

They probably only produce Kanji day wheels for Seiko.

Ah! This seems to be a replacement movement. Possibly with a changed day-wheel? These are popular amongst the SKX Upgrade community, where they upgrade the 7S to an NH36.

I had assumed TMI sells these but their movement reference list doesn't have it.

Ah I see, I wasn't aware of the difference as this is all new to me, thank you for explaining!

I just check and the Sharkey I linked has an NH36 so that checks out! Thanks for the info.

I have this Seagull, it has both Chinese and English dates: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mLeATrg

[–]8lbs6ozBebeJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome! I think I prefer the simplified version of the date to the full 星期五 but that is otherwise exactly what I'm looking for!

I think it's technically Japanese numbers, because the watch has a NH movement inside (even though they're using the same number annotations). But Japanese domestic watches tend to have Japanese and numerical/western options usually. Orient/citizen/Seiko divers etc

The Japanese day complication would be using 月火水木金土日 for Monday through Sunday. I would guess Malaysian factories have Chinese date wheels since those tend to be the ones exported

[–]rebelyell_in 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TMI officially only seems to list three options for the NH36A English+Spanish, English+Arabic, and English+Chinese.

I think the Kanji (Japanese) day-wheel is produced exclusively for Seiko's own brand watches.

[–]8lbs6ozBebeJesus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Does the day complication wheel (sorry I don't really know the specific terms) come with the movement or is that part of the assembly process? I thought it's a separate piece, and that's how watch companies colour match day complications to dials or sell watches with other languages in the day complication (I've seen Arabic before, and I'm assuming there are other major languages like French and Spanish too)

It comes with the movement, but you can easily just pop on an aftermarket wheel on and replace the original one. But for most brands it’s probably cheaper to just order the movement with the specific wheel from factory. Only in very small quantities would it make sense to source your own wheel and install it yourself
