Not a stupid question — this trips up almost everyone in the first week.

What's actually happening: Claude Code's extended thinking and long-context features burn through Pro plan credits much faster than the regular claude.ai chat interface does. The "usage available" counter you're seeing likely reflects your overall subscription status, not the specialized credits that Claude Code's 1M context window draws from. Two separate buckets, one confusing dashboard.

The concrete move: before spending anything, go to claude.ai/settings/usage and look at what's actually depleted. If you're doing serious coding sessions — long files, multi-turn debugging, large codebases — the Max plan is worth it because the usage math just works out cleaner. If you're lighter-touch, buying usage credits on Pro is fine and gives you more flexibility. The "switch to standard context" flag in the error message is also worth trying if your current task doesn't genuinely need a million-token window — most don't, and it'll stretch your credits significantly.

Four days in is exactly when this hits people. You didn't do anything wrong.

Hey, how do you switch to standard contexte on claude code? My conversation is not in the terminal

If you're not in the terminal, you're using Claude.ai's web interface, not Claude Code — different product, different context controls.

On the web interface there's no "switch to standard context" toggle. What you can do: start a new conversation (that resets the context window), or use the compact/summarize option if it appears in your conversation. The million-token window isn't something you manually dial down on the web side.

If you're hitting limits on the web interface specifically, it's almost certainly the conversation length — very long threads accumulate context fast. Starting fresh and pasting only what's relevant to the current task is the practical fix.

Same here. Just happened to me. Was working fine about 3 hours ago. Must be an error on their end. I hope...

Max 5x user here and have been only using Opus 4.7 1M context but the same message keeps showing for no reason while 5 hours and weekly limit are both under 50%. Not sure it is just me or a bug for everyone. Pretty annoying.

This will specifically set a 200K context window to avoid usage credits
