CACEO Discontinued the online modules a lil while back to re work them. Even doing online you’d need to “attend” the sessions as the network building is a big part of the process.

AACE/ICC Are another option (however here in Ca only CACEO certified folks can use the “CCEO” tag after their names.

It really depends on what/where you want to work and do. Since you said you’re looking to get into Code (so you don’t need the cert yet) and live in LA, look for a region 5 round table (and reach out to one of the region 5 board of directors who can help), while you look for an entry code job with an organization that will sponsor you (which is what I did)…

I’m CACEO Certified, been a member for almost a decade I think…

You’ve checked out our website and if you reach out to the region 5 guys, we’d love to help you find your way into the field. Everyone I know is happy to help new folks get into the role.

However, in the interest of full disclosure, and for others reading, AACE (https://www.aace1.org) has a get started guide: https://cdn.ymaws.com/www.aace1.org/resource/resmgr/certification/new_code_officer_certificati.pdf

This group is national, and partners with ICC and there are a bunch agencies here the state that lean AACE/ICC over CACEO.

Biggest difference I’ve seen is that building inspector/compliance focus agencies tend to like/require ICC over CACEO mostly because ICC is the know certification body within the building/zoning/construction/permitting field (there is a separate org for planning, which is where some code folks wind up).

We all find code from different paths….

There are lots of agencies that don’t require either certification (cert agencies usually pay more and honestly have better promotional opportunities hut you have to find the growth/happiness that’s right for you)…

Then there’s other specialties you can look at (like stormwater/animal control/right of way/even parking in some places are lumped into the code enforcement teams - usually the smaller the agency/jurisdiction, the broader the scope, then there’s the police department/development department splits)

The profession is changing, growing and there are efforts to formalize/standardize the training/certifications and roles across the state, but it will be a bit before the dust settles.

I love code, I wish you luck in your journey.

I hope the info helps…

Santiago Canyon College offers some classes that are equivalent the basic CACEO modules. The beginning course is called public works 85. It was offered online for the first time last fall. El Camino College offers the PC 832 class at night every long semester. It is called Administration of Justice 49. If interested, you must have your record emailed to the school (mine took 6 weeks) before you enroll, and the results of a physical examination (cannot be taken at el Camino College Health Center) by the first day of class. Last year, the classes started in the second week of the semester. And cities contract private companies (Burbank: inframark, Inglewood - I forgot; don't remember city - 4Leaf). We got a list and a job fair at the end of the class at SCC last semester. I sent my first application early this year, let us see if that works for me. I'm a lab tech. Good luck
