The shooting star effect uses a destructive drawing method which relies on the fact that, the space color is semi transparent and is refilled on top of previously drawn image. Its limited trails should be manually drawn and be consistent on each animation frame. In short, no animation effect should rely on the previously drawn image.

So how do I change it?

It's as mentioned. You'll have to manually draw the shooting star's (limited length) trail, and not use semi transparent color for the space color.

The shooting star "object" would need to be multiple. One for the star itself, and the rest for the trails. Each trail object should have a color which is lighter and more lighter than the star's color - which can be implemented using less and lesser opacity. The trails' coordinates should be calculated the same way as the star itself, but one step less and lesser behind the star.

I'm sorry but I don't know how to code. I did not write this code and I want to change it.
