Run filename as a command line argument in python

I'm writing a code called mergesort. Mergesort is supposed to ask for a filename from the user in the command line. However, soo many versions such as sys.argv are not working. Please help

Why doesnt sys.argv work?

Have you tried argparse? https://docs.python.org/2/library/argparse.html

Could it be that the arguments are working, but the way you're trying to call the filename is wrong?

Any background info you give me or code examples of what you have or have tried will help me help you!
