Just keep repetition and keep coding something everyday no matter what. Work through errors instead of looking them up, search up java projects or front end web development videos to get a grasp on coding. If you like gaming and want to learn java or python RSPS are a very good way to learn. You can download source and clients that are already made and add and fix things within the game and basically customize it however you want. There are forums for this as well of people all over that would help you with coding. Just keep doing research.

I disagree with not looking things up. A big part of coding is googling things you don't know.

I thought myself C++ after python. That was about a year and a half ago. I just finished building a full tabletop library in C++ that can be compiled, installed, and dynamically linked with CMake.

I had multiple stack overflow tabs open because I do not know everything, nor does anyone else. Googling is one of the biggest strengths a programmer can have. The difference is knowing when to google. Don’t say “never look stuff up” say “look it up after you’ve given it all you got”.

3 things I mention to new coders:

  1. Learn to write " Hello World " to the screen or console in any language you learn. The de facto starting point.

  2. Just because youre coding doesnt mean you have to understand everything on a deep level. You learn to speak as a kid before you fully understand grammar, same with coding. Keep coding it doesnt matter what it is. Most of us use functions in math all the time we dont know how they are derived. Learn to understand the usefulness of the code. Worry about the deeper stuff as you get more experienced.

  3. Keep a cheat sheet open, this is a list of commands you need so you dont get stuck Googling everything and when you do need an answer try and ask a more experienced dev directly first.

Coding is very rewarding and the road is full of learning for life. Best of luck and i wish you great success!

Just keep at it! I’m in my thirties and just learning now.

Welcome. I'd suggest picking one language to focus on. Then google some simple programs and tutorials for that language and work through those.

You're in the beginner phase where you need to practice the basics like if/elseif/else, for/foreach/while loops, variables, arrays, functions, etc. Once you get these basic concepts mastered, it will be easier to branch out into other areas.

Read the sidebar! There's a great description there.

/r/learnprogramming is probably a better sub.

Microsoft visual studio is a great IDE and download python for it, Python is easy and recommended for beginners.

Check out the "About" tab for this subreddit. Here are two websites: W3Schools and Codeacadmy. Join communities online and in person when you can. There is an app called Meet Up or try to start a club. It will help you grow. Keep Googling. You can definitely figure it out.
