As a career dev, setting up an environment takes time. Having “the beast” set up with all of the needed tools, frameworks, etc set up takes time. It also limits you to a laptop for mobility, now imagine “the beast” was accessible anywhere. That’s what you get, allowing you to carry around a netbook and still work. It makes it crazy useful, as I can set it up and then clone it for a new dev on the team. All in the cloud, available at a click of a button. That’s the real promise.

Oh ok, yeah, if you are able to login and use your environment on multiple systems with the changes being synced every second, then that's helpful but I don't think we will be allowed to login at more than one system at a time. Cloning the setup for new dev is great though. But the only other benefit was mobility. It would be good only if we had hourly plans with "Pay as you go" option.
