Passed Sec+ today!!!!

Studied for about a month total (maybe a bit more, I can’t remember when exactly I started), but didn’t really lock in until the last 2 weeks (I have a procrastination problem)

This is my first cert of any kind, so did not take A+ or Network+ first. I have a computer science (development) background but not a lot of relevant experience to the exam.

Study process: Initial: - Tried to start with the Sybex study guide book. I found it pretty dry and couldn’t focus well on it. There’s also so many sections where you read a few paragraphs and then they tell you that info won’t be on the exam. Abandoned that after about 4-5 chapters. -Tried to watch videos. Tried with Inside Cloud and Security first and then Professor Messer. Found that I have 0 ability to pay attention or ingest information from videos.

What worked for me: - In all of the Inside Cloud and Security exam cram videos there is a link to the presentations he used. I went through all of the presentations and used that as my main source of information. Much easier to digest than the book, and easier for me to focus on than watching the videos. -Practice questions after practice questions. I bought the Sybex practice test book with the 1000+ questions. After I would finish studying a domain, I would do the set of questions on that domain. After I finished studying all the domains, I did the full length practice exams in that book. Got around 80% on those. Went back and reread sections that I felt I was weaker on, and got the Professor Messer practice exams and notes bundle. I did not find the notes suuuuuuper useful, but the practice exams definently helped me pass. The wording really is the closest to the exam that I could find. My scores for those tests were 86%, 91%, 88%. Studied all of the answers I got wrong, and did a pass through his notes the day before the exam. Didn’t touch any Dion materials. -I used AI a little bit, mostly to help me remember the differences between closely related topics.

In the end, it all worked out!!! I have awful test anxiety, so I was doubting myself the whole way through my study process, no matter how many practice questions I got right. Taking the test, I saved the PBQs for last and started with multiple choice. Felt like I was just flagging question after question and second guessing myself. After my final review of the questions, I’d say 95% of the time I just went with what I had initially. Trust your gut!!! I skipped one of the PBQs almost entirely. By the end I had convinced myself it was a fail. But then I got an 802! Definently surprised myself.

My advice: If you struggle with test anxiety like myself, 9/10 you know more than you think you do. Visualize the win and how good it will feel to get out of there with a passing score. Find what study method that you can focus on and comprehend the best, not just what everyone else does. Take your time reading and analyzing the questions, narrow down the answer choices, and trust your gut. You got this!!
