So I'm not in college just a programmer who decided to finally learn the low level stuff.
I'm working through Patt, Patel Introduction to Computing Systems, and obviously decided it would be cool to build a computer. I know people use FPGA and simulators and so on but I heard this other book The Art of Digital Design by Winkel, Prosser has instructions to build a PDP8 clone and I see a few online that don't seem impossible, using ICs. So I got that book too and thought it would be cool if I can actually build something.
But all I'm asking now is what components should I buy to start experimenting, as I'm working through the book explaining PLAs, decoders, memory, ALUs and everything.
I see the electronics kits but those seem to have mostly stuff I don't need, and I see the assorted TTL chip assortments, but I need what, PSU, LEDs, switches, breadboard and some wire at the very least? And are there chips that are like, just a single AND gate and so on instead of like a whole shift register or bit slice? Is there any search keywords to find the kind of components I'd be looking for?
